Spydie prices dropping on Amazon

#1

Post by iwolf81 »

I've been monitoring the Dragonfly G10 on Amazon for a while. The price for the it dropped to $70 yesterday, so I finally pulled the trigger on it. However, today it is now $68, and looking around, the Rock Lobster is $158 and the P'Kal is $131. If you have Amazon Prime or Mom, there is free two-day shipping. Now may be a good time to check out a Spydie you've been eyeing for while.

BTW I got my Rock Lobster for $151, but it's price bottomed out at $130 at the end of December 2010.

Regards,
Ira

Isn't it often a sign of a knife being discontinued when the prices get cut low? This seems to have been the case quite a bit in the past. Does anyone know anything about the Dragonfly G10 being disco'd?

I don't know about the D'Fly G-10 being discontinued, but Amazon's price for an item is normally adjusted automatically when other online sites adjust their prices. Sometimes these sites get into an automated adjustment battle and the price could drop significantly or rise ridiculously.

Call me cheap but $70 for a Dfly, G10 or not, is still a bit steep. I paid $80 for a Manix 2 and $50 for a ZDP Delica. I'm sure a better deal is still out there.

The g-10 dragonfly is at Cutlery shoppe for 70 bucks regular price. Type in nutnfancy to get free shipping. No big deal.

Allen, you won't find a ZDP delica for 50 bucks right now. I got my mine for 55 when the FFG ZDP delicas came out. dealers were clearing there shelfs so they discounted the saber ground ones.

Yeah, I really didn't want to spend $70 on a Dragonfly either, but that's been the best price (including shipping) I've seen in almost a year. I was willing to hold out longer, but I got to handle a co-worker's one this week and it bit me (figuratively, not literally.)

They're long gone, it was some shop on Amazon a while back had a bunch of them going for $50 plus shipping and a few of us got them. Yeah, that's not a very common everyday deal but they do pop up like that. You just have to get the cash in hand and be ready to buy when they come up (which is why i always miss sprint runs cause i'm never ready).

wow you lot are whinging about paying $70 bucks for a G10 Fly? Our currency is stronger than yours and we are paying $120 (or about $130ish in your money).

I hope if Spyderco is going to discontinue something its listed on their site as discontinued....as I have one paid for on back order along with a few others here. No biggie though - if its gone I will grab an Al Mar SLB instead and be done with it.

There are a few wholesalers both in the states and internationally atm that have no G10 flys and have been out of stock for at least 6 weeks - the stocking delay is getting really really annoying.

I seriously doubt the G-10 Dragonfly is being dropped. An alternate, and IMHO more likely theory given that Amazon prices things it sells to be reasonably competitive with lowest price of its affiliates, would be that a new shipment landed recently and the deep discounters, who generally sell out fastest, have them back in stock.

Cutlery Shoppe is now listing the D'Fly G10 with the "new shipment in stock" tag. If I were to do this purchase again, I would go with Jeff at CS and use the 'nutnfancy' coupon. Perhaps someone else will put this knowledge to good use...?

I agree, but I love it. It is my favorite knife. I just got it yesterday and am struggling to decide which to carry (Sage 3 or Dragonfly). The dfly g-10 is a very well built knife. It was a hard price to swallow, but paying over $100 for some of spyderco's best models quickly makes $70 seem pretty fair for a strong knife with grippy g-10 scales like the g-10 dflys.

I struggle between the g-10 and the zdp-189 frn model, but they are only $10 apart.

Did you see the story a couple months back where two big ebay sellers got their pricing programs locked into a loop that topped out at almost 24 million dollars for a book?

Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

I buy all my knifes from amazon but be careful. I have bought a few knives that had to be returned to due defects. most of the time they're nib condition but just a head's up I have gotten a few bad apples.

Yes, I was thinking about this story when I wrote about Amazon's auto-prices rising ridiculously.

So your Fly arrived?! Good to know. There was someone else in the thread who said one of the retailers listed new shippments - perhaps they have broken the g10 fly drought. I will keep my eye on my retailer to see if there is any movement on my 7 week wait.

Also that amazon story was really interesting. I wonder if there are similar programs on Ebay? I believe online sellers should have to state that they actually have the physical item in their warehouse. I am getting really sick of buying something "in stock" to only find out that they actually drop-ship or what have you.

Yes the G-10 dragonfly came Friday afternoon. I'm pretty sure the g-10 flys are on the loose. Mine was pretty tight when i first got it. Had to lube it and open/close it like crazy to break it in. It is pretty nice looking thought

I wouldn't say whining, i just live on a tight hobby budget and look for deals. I have no doubt this knife isn't worth $70. I would pay a stupid amount for a Dfly in ZDP/carbon fiber, but they haven't made it yet.

MSRP's of the G-10 D'fly and "base model" Manix 2 are the same due to a combination of circumstances. Japanese production costs about 20% than producing the same thing in the US would, and the "base" Manix 2 is one of several US models where Spyderco has been experimenting with lower than normal markups. So, you have one knife made relatively more expensive by its country of origin and another made relatively less expensive by a voluntary lowering of its price.
