Lightning Strike Carbon Fiber Manix 2

#1

Post by dschur »

I really wanted a Carbon Fiber Manix 2, but with the aftermarket prices so high, instead I got a foliage green CTS-XHP and had tuffthumbz make custom scales for it. As long as it was in, I figured what the heck and had Geoff turn the volume up to 11 and rip off the knob by using Lightning Strike Carbon Fiber (has an embedded bronze mesh). It turned out pretty sick, I thought I'd share for you to enjoy.

Eric, Sal thank you for designing the Manix 2. Hope you can see how great your knives would look in lightning strike carbon fiber and think of using it for something special one day.

Looks sick. Probably gets quite a few second glances.

I'm not a fan of highly polished CF, but that's a pretty knife.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Beautiful, that is some of the nicest looking polished CF.

I love the thick FFG XHP on it as well, I can't wait to get the XHP Millie to match my XHP Manix!

That is beautiful.

I'm making scales for my Manix2 now out of G-10 which came in 1/8" thick slabs. I sanded them down to the same thickness as the scales that came on the knife. My concern was the scales were too thick to give adequate access to the lock buttons. The CF on your knife looks like it is 1/8" thick and you don't seem to have a problem releasing the lock. At first I was wanting the scales to stay 1/8" thick to increase the thickness of the handle a little but then thought about the buttons not sticking out enough. The next set I make I'm only going to thin the part of the handles that are on the end of the knife with the buttons and leave the back half thicker.

I just wanted to ask you how much difference is there in the thicker scales when it comes to releasing the lock? Once again that is a gorgeous knife and I would love one like it but my skills need to improve before I work with CF. CF is beautiful and I'll want it to look perfect.

Hi Jack, I'll have to wait a bit to answer your question as the knife hasn't been shipped back to me yet, it just got finished and that video is by the customizer, not me the owner.

If you look closely, you'll see that he beveled a good bit by the lock to address that (yes, the material is 1/8", sharp eye). I've seen that beveling around the lock done before my people even with the stock scales for this who wanted easier on finger opening, more like an axis-lock as it helps you to get more purchase on it. You may want to try that technique on your next set of scales as well.

I have some G-10 that is layered red/black. I wasn't thinking when I chose it because with a Manix2 the scales are flat so there wouldn't be the depth difference needed after sanding to show both colors like I wanted. Now, this is going to give an opportunity for both colors to be visible by sanding around the buttons and pivot area that part of the scale will be thinner and expose the different layers. I think I'll be playing with that this weekend if not today. I would start now but I have my grandson with me and he's hungry. What the heck, he can wait. He did eat yesterday afterall. :D

When will you be getting your knife? If you hate waiting like I do I feel for ya.

Got the knife back - it's just as it looks in the video. The extra thickness has not affected the lock operation, I think it was compensated for by the beveling around the lock lever.

I also added a an STRKnives custom low rider small (Pen) clip in titanium anodized to a bronze color not shown in the video. It really brings out the bronze in the CF (thanks Steve!)

I was pleased to see the weight stayed down at 4.25 ounces.
