Help Me Decide My 2nd Spyderco

#1

Post by jotobo »

Sage 2 (carbon fiber)
Para 2 (digicam, black blade)
Endura (combo edge, black blade, FRN)

I can not decide for the life of me. Been carrying a Griptilian and more recently a Tenacious. I really like the Tenacious for the most part but I want to upgrade to a better Spyderco product.

Which one should I get?

The Sage 2 is Ti with an integral lock, Sage 1 is CF with a liner lock, FYI.

Really, it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a longer blade, then go with the Endura. That would be my last choice among those though, unless budget was a concern. It's a solid knife, just doesn't do anything for me.

I would go for the Para 2 unless blade length was a concern, although it's blade is shorter than the Tenacious and Grip IIRC.

Best would be to hold all of them, but if you can't, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them...

I do not have the luxury of holding each of them.

I'd say go Endura. It is a flagship model, after all... you'll have to own one at some point in this addiction, just get it over with now :p .

Actually, I'd say go with the lock you like. Those three choices cover all your bases. Do you like back locks? Endura for the win. Liner locks? Sage all the way. Want to try out a comp lock? Para 2! For what its worth, I still recommend the Endura. Aside from the SS Police, I think that is the design that truly embodies Spyderco. Plus, it comes in virtually every blade configuration, coating, and color imaginable. That kind of variety is a selling point in and of itself. :D

I would go in the order you have them posted. Sage first because it has such perfect fit and finish. A great looking knife that can be edc'd but also looks good enough in a dress situation. very versatile.
The Para2 is a good knife, strong lock, and definitely meant to be a real "user".
The Endura, not a knife that I personally like at all, but the vast majority of Spyderco fans really love it. Light weight and yet still pretty tough and good as an edc.

Give it time buddy. I bought my first Spyderco 2001ish... since then I've owned dozens. At any given time, I probably own around 10. The only reason I haven't just run out of storage space is loss/gift attrition to my collection :p . If you stick around for long, I see all three of those finding a way into your pocket :) .

Really it comes down to personal perference, they're very different knives. I would say you should judge the knives based on length (size) and grip. The Endura is the largest, and actually too big for my liking. The Sage is the smallest. If you were looking for something similar to the size of a Sage but more like the construction of the Endura, I would say buy a Delica (one of my personal favorites in terms of ergonomics and size). You also have to take into account grips because the Sage and Paramilitary both have choils which cause the knife to hold differently, whereas the Endura (or delica) do not. Some people like choils, others prefer knives without; I'm in the latter camp.

It's one great knife. I'd go Para 2 first, Sage next and Endura last. They are all great but Para 2 is my fav.

Im kind of torn. I would like something the size of the Tenacious but a better all around knife.

the sage 1 and para 2 are my favorite spydies i own.

the sage is slightly smaller, but i feel much better suited to edc tasks. fits my hand better for controlling cuts, and the textured carbon fiber is to die for, its just dead sexy. no lanyard hole.

para 2 is slightly larger, and probably better suited to field work or self defense, however I edc mine all the time. larger thumb ramp for more aggressive force behind cuts. fat lanyard hole.

both in s30v, sage is from taiwain, para here in the us.

i would definitely get both!!! but probably the sage first. i am amazed every day i use it that it wasnt made in golden CO.

Im leaning towards the Para. It is similar to the Tenacious in a lot of ways that I can tell, just better. I work my knives hard as well.

Im not a fan of 154cm, so how does it compare to S30V? Everything I hear about VG10 makes me want to go the Delica/Endura route. This 8cr13mov is ok but it doesnt stay sharp very long and if it gets wet it will corrode very, very quickly.

154cm and VG10 are pretty neck and neck. S30v one step above that, but also harder to sharpen. People here that know more about this than me though.

What I read about VG10 intrigues me. I would really like a combo edge, its too bad that the Para doesnt seem to come with that option.
