EDC: Thinnest + backup SD?
EDC: Thinnest + backup SD?
I need a recommendation for my off hand/public friendly EDC. I currently use a Boker Subcom as my secondary & love that thing. I'd like to have a bit more blade though and have it serve a bit more in the SD capable category. Here are some of the like-2-haves:
- About as thin as the Subcom
- 3" minimum blade
- A clip would be preferred ( used as a money clip like the Subcom)
- A lock is not necessary if the choil "locks it" ( UK Pen Knife?)
- Colorful scales option would be nice, to make it even more public friendly
Like I mentioned, I carry an SD dedicated knife that's not seen, so this new pick will get all of the use. I think that talked about bigger Kiwi would be ideal, but waiting is tough!

SS Delica comes to mind, or a Caly 3.5. Neither of those have colored scales though. Maybe a yellow Salt 1?
Edit: It's a bit on the fat side, but the lil temperance is just over 3", good for SD, has a clip and has colored scales...
The clip might be a little awkward, but I bet you could have STR or someone make you a custom clip.

Spyderco Cricket might fit the bill, in case you are not lefty. Its a minisized civilian like knife.
Boker Subclaw is extremely good and you already have experience with its bellied brother. Same everthing, just a claw or hawkbill instead of the drop point/clip point.
Spyderco H1 Ladybug Hawkbill is good too, but is missing a clip. But due FRN is very light.
EDIT: sorry, have seen the 3" minimum req. just now.
CLB has some decent collabs with Boker, Trance is good, the should start making it in Ti framelock as well, I`d wish.

C-25 & c-50
For a self defense blade where blade length and thickness are an issue I have a recommendation. The older Centofante C-25 & C-50 models with their spike-like designs were some of the best SD blades. They were streamlined like an icepick and have a wicked point that has the potential of major damage and stopping power.
I have a Benchmade model that is very similar to the design of the C-25 & C-50 models and that being the model 640 Boguszewski Spike model from the late 90s. It and the Spyderco Centofante models 25 & 50 had many similarities in their overall designs.
Those are 2 Spyders I traded away that rank really high on my "regret list"
Another notable piece of information on the C-50 is that it was a Golden Colorado Spyder and one of the very first Spyders to have used ATS-34 in it's hayday. For all you newbies you all should look it up. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I'm thinking for thin some of the SS knives would be ideal. Adventura or Spyderco Kerambit are quite slim. The Rookie G10 is thinner than the Caly and has a mean tip on it. Those knives are thin enough to be good in waistband carry even.
For a clip the Cricket is far thinner than a Subcom and the PE while wouldn't be a great SD would be better than nothing (unless you can throw punches/kicks). The Balance SS will be an IDEAL thin option to replace the Cricket as it has a much more secure grip. I look forward to trying that one in the waistband.

Was wondering that myself. if you're talking about thin as in not large when the smallest dimension is measured as compared to other knives, the SS :spyder: models are certainly a force to be reckoned with.
I was personally surprised by the lightness, thinness and reach of the Navaja.

Guh. Sorry I'll edit that. Didn't read well
.
There are a ton of 2.5mm blades out there: Delica, Adventura, Rookie, Dragonfly, etc.
The Centofante3/4, Chapparel (coming soon) and Ladybug have 2mm blades.
Of the candidates I think a Dragonfly ZDP-189 would make a grreat candidate for a EDC money clip. It would hold an edge a long time too.

Here's my thick and thin combo. The stretch with ZDP slices as well as I need it to, and it's ambidextrous.

I have a Delica 4 too, dont know if the older model Delicas are thinner but the Trance is noticeably thinner than the current Delica version, however both are VERY comfortable to carry on the pocket.
The steel is better in the Delica 4 and the grind stronger (saber, scandi), the Trance is a better slicer, as the blade is thinner too and with a higher grind, corrosion resistance should be a bit better on the Delica´s VG-10
