Next blade, Starmate or Military?

#1

Post by Simple Man »

Okay, I am looking to pick up my next Spydie. It will be my EDC for whatever, boxes, straps, food, mail, etc. I have boiled it down to either the Starmate PE or the Military PE 440V. Right now I carry a PS VG-10 Endura with no problems with size(ie sheeple). I like the Endura, but I want a PE and something a little higher up the food chain. Which one do I get?

Edited because.....well just because it needed editin'.

Get the Starmate first. I have had mine for a week now, and am very happy with it. I bought a PE for a "me" Christmas present. Someone had one for trade over on Bladeforums. I think it was "Jeff/1911".

Both are very nice knives and the Starmate is getting rare. But if you don't plan on getting both, the Military is the way to go. It's a terrifically versatile knife; it really slices well once you learn how to use it. I think the ergonomics are first-rate. I've had a Military as my most used EDC for about a year now, and it's displaced almost everything else, including a large Sebenza. The Millie is simply a bargain and a great knife.

As BSC said, I only plan on getting one or the other now. Maybe well down the road the other will come, but for now they are too much alike for my knife budget allow both. At the moment, I'm leaning toward the Mili., I think I would be a little apprehensive in using the Starmate as hard since it is a discontinued model. I want something I can use without regret.

What do each of them weigh? Does the Mili weigh less even though it is larger?

The Starmate is very nice and a discontinued model, but the Millie is better.

Hi Rom - If you are only going to get one and your next will be a long while away, go with the Military. I have had one for about five years, and back in the day when I only had one Spydie at a time, I carried it for about two years EVERY DAY. I used it hard - no not abused - but used well and often. It is a great knife - one of the best folders that Spyderco has made - and I think the best general purpose/field use folder they make.

Now, to make the decision just a little more difficult. - When I lost my first Military, I replaced it with a Starmate; which I used in the same fashion as my Military - for about a year, until I lost that one. (I have since learned how to hang on to my Spydies) The Starmate is a very acceptable substitute, but it is not the Military. I have been lucky enough now to be able to replace both of them. I rotate them both thru my EDC. If you were to tell me I could have only one OR the other, I would choose the Military - with only a few moments hesitation.
BTW FWIW - I just weighed my Starmate: 3.8 oz, and my Military: 4.0 oz.

That said, John Jensen - at johnfjensen.com - has the C55GPE Starmate should you be interested. He also shows that he has the C36GPE Military in ATS 34, should you be interested in that flavor Military. Other wise, I would email Linda at GlassHartt@aol.com for your new Military.

Hope I have been able to help more than confuse. Check back in with us and let us know how you like your new knife - which ever it is you end up with.

Oh, and one more thing.... It matters not which one knife you get, You will have no regrets getting or using it.

Chuck

I highly recommend getting the Military w/ComboEdge....you won't be disappointed. The PlainEdge portion is about 2.5", while the SpyderEdge takes up about 1.5" on the bottom part of the blade.....plenty of PlainEdge, IMO, with just the right amount of SpyderEdge for tougher cutting chores.

Before this Millie(a gift from Allen E. Treat, BTW ), I carried the PE Military...used it/carried it EVERYDAY without any problems whatsoever. It slices and dices like there is no tomorrow with that hefty blade w/plenty of belly.

Even though I plan on eventually getting a Starmate....I don't think that any other Spydie can take the place of my Millie CE.

I have and love both, but the Military is my EDC while the Starmate is usually displayed above my fireplace (the only knife displayed).

Both are great knives, but the Military just feels so good in my hand.

I strongly suggest that you try to handle both knives. I think your decision will then be an easy one.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

Chris/ROM831 -

Take it from the masses! The mili

( especially in P&S/CE ) is the

way to go! Then, you may ask, like a

fool, why did I pass mine on to Our

esteemed colleague KBR? It was for

the LOVE OF CHRIST! And that a fellow

forumite wanted one, and could not yet

afford what I already had, this being

so, I passed on the CE mili to KBR.

KBR reciprocated unnecessarily with

a SE Ayoob You see now, the wisdom

of Jesus in John 13:34 ; OBTW, I

eventually got a CE Starmate from

"Classy Glassy" another forumite

MANY of Us hold in the "highest"

esteem!

Thank you all for all the posts. I believe I have landed on the PE Millie. I would go with the CE, but I already have a CE Endura, and I kinda miss the straight portion at he base of the blade.

Next questions;
Does anybody know when the S30V Millie will be available?
Will it be worth getting instead of the 440V?
