Just wondering if I would be able to swap the blade out and slot it into the scales of the Dragonfly FG g10 without having to make any adjustments?
Maybe but know your nixing your warranty and may run into a snag if not mechanically inclined.
As for the lockbar tension IMHO it's often just knife-to-knife. I have a handful of ladybugs that range by about 300% in stiffness (based on no tool of measurement, hehe).
Ahh, it finally showed up. All I have to say is that the BRG D2 is friggin awesome!!!
Not to mention it's substantially lighter than the g-10 version.
Side by side comparison looks like the blades could be interchanged, but I don't think I will be attempting it. Side note, I have no idea how the blade pivot screw would be removed, the opposite side just spins and there is no way to grip it.

It can be done. I have a buddy that bought both specifically to swap the ZDP-189 blade into the FG G-10 & steel liners. Carrying it around right now in fact. I think he gave the VG-10 & BRG FRN "parts" to his wife for her own EDC.

I successfully constructed the Frankenstein G-10 ZDP-189 Dragonfly!
The reason for doing so was because I found the FRN handles on the BRG Dfly to be wreaking havoc on my jeans. And that was after only one day of use!
I'll post pics later, I think it looks sweet. Someone posted earlier saying the lockbars would have to be swapped. I do not think that is the case, two polished surfaces shouldn't abrade upon each other (at least not significantly.) Besides if the lockbar from the zdp were also made from zdp and at the same exact hardness wouldn't galling occur?

I guess time will tell.

Yes, it's always been my assumption that the same steel as the liners (something like 420j2) is used in the lockbar, backspacer etc. The only knives that would use the blade steel for anything but the blade would IMO be H1 knives, for obvious reasons (corrosion proofing).
That sounds like it would be the ultimate dragonfly! Hopefully I will be able to pick up a ZDP d'fly pretty soon, and I might try that out as well.
I been away from the knife news for a few months and what a nice surprise to see the Dragonfly with a couple of new models; ZDP and a FRN with the wire clip!
I liked the G10 but it seemed a bit heavy for a small knife.
So now just debating on which to get now or later, or both now etc etc.
Feel compelled to add this. Thanks to Spyderco for making these models, I really hope they are great sellers for you!

I understand where you're coming from, the G-10 version is noticeably heavier that the FRN. Not necessarily a bad thing though, the G-10 still pretty light!
Does spyderco use glue on the pivot screws?I tried heating the pivot by dipping the knife into the boiling water for about a minute but didn't work. Should I heat it longer?
I bought them both, FRN serrated and ZDP. Got the serrated today and I can say the Dragonfly has finally transformed into the knife I had always hoped for in a small knife. Love the wire clip design.
Now what to do with my G10 version? Frankenstein it like you guys are doing, sell it.. don't know. Too heavy for my tastes.
Awesome! thanks for the pics and glad to see it worked ok.
@Blerv - Not really an issue to void the warranty, as I would never send a folding knife overseas for repair or warranty issues, as it may get seized by customs on the way back in. Utterly ridiculous, but that's how it seems to be with Australian Customs Service. Once IN country - ok, but getting a knife that's legal-to-own INTO the country is the problem. Madness...
I have stripped & cleaned my Endura4, and managed to put it back together just fine using a clamp on the lockbar ; works better than ever.
The ZDP dragonfly is going to have to wait because my dealer had a ZDP stretch, and I've been after one of those for a while. :D
Ive been carrying a G10 dragonfly for a while now and i came here trying to figure out if a zdp blade swap was possible and some of you were already on top of it :) . Bought a ZDP dragonfly right away and made my own Frankenstein dragonfly last night. Spent a couple hours on the sharpmaker, might need a little more time tonight to get it perfect but the edge is coming along really nice :)
Couple questions though, sorry if these have been answered before. Is the dragonfly zdp blade laminated like some of the others? Just from looking at it i cant see any line where the steels would match so I'm guessing its just solid zdp? If so, do i need to be concerned with this blade being more brittle and more prone to breakage? I don't do anything crazy with this knife I'm just curious. Was the reason for laminating the other zdp blades a cost thing or strength thing, or both?

Hello EvilOlivE
the ZDP189 blade on the dragonfly is solid ZDP, if there was lamination the steel marking on the blade would mention it (CalypsoJr had 420J2/ZDP189 on the tang) and indeed you would see a lamination line.
IIRC the main reason for lamination was reducing the cost and increasing rust resistance as ZDP tends to stain/pit easily.
As for brittle aspect, i wouldn't be afraid, if used properly (to cut that is) ido'nt think you'll break the blade, chipping has been observed when sharpened at low angles (less than 15° per side) but really nothing to fear.
Thank you for clearing that up for me Senate :) I thought that's what I was seeing in front of me but I thought I read that all of :spyder: 's zdp was laminated. I really like the look of the zdp, it looks a little more gray colored and not as shiny and polished as the vg-10 blade (which is cool in its own way). This is like the ultimate dragonfly now :D
