Anyone have a Palm Pilot?

#1

Post by vampyrewolf »

I'm going to be buying one in about a week, so far the m125 looks good(I run XP, based on NT 4.0... or the m500 would be good)

Anyone have one?

Dear VW,
I've had a Palm M125 for a year. Love it, and it should hook up to your PC just fine.

If you're not dead-set on a Palm, you might check out the new Dell PDA, online at www.dell.com. Looks good for the price.

swede> Pocket PC vs Palm OS? one of the larger debates, but when you compare 1600 to 13000 programs, and compatability... palm wins hands down.

what kind of time do you get out of batts? I'll probably be using Energizer E2(flashlight use) or pure energy recharge(diskman)... price is the same for both.

VW,

I just use an alkaline AAA battery, nothing fancy. I get about 3-4 weeks out of it, but I'm pretty slim on uasge time...probably on 1-3 hours in that time frame.

The models you're looking at are all solid choices. My only suggestion would be to also look at Sony's Clie line. The are fully compatible PalmOS machines but they tend to offer somewhat more features at any given price point. You may be able to find some good deals on the color PEG-T615C, which was recently replaced by the T665C, but is still a great unit.

Vamp,
I'v had a Visor Handspring Delux for abou 2 years and a Palm 505 for a year. I'v found they both work great. The Palm is a little smaller and thinner and is in color but the Visor is about $300 bucks less. I have a expandable keyboard for both and a digital camera for the visor (cost me $40 bucks on ebay). Both use palm software and are able to beam info back and forth. I have a back up module for the Visor if I forget to change the batteries. The palm is rechargable. If you have any questions drop me a line.

VW, I had and can wholeheartedly recommend a Palm m500. Very slim and lightweight, it has a built-in rechargable battery that will hold a charge for WEEKS at a time. Actually, it never needs to run out of juice ever, because it charges in its cradle, which, I found, is a good place to store it. HotSyncing is easy and the included software bundle is worth quite a bit (and very useful). It takes two kinds of expansion cards, with which you can store massive amounts of data. Plus, this model just dropped $50 in price with the release of the newest model Palm handhelds.

However, you may have noticed I said "had," past tense. I sold mine on Ebay about a week ago. After using it for a couple months, I realized it wasn't as useful as I had anticipated.

I had a 64MB card on which I loaded many reference volumes (basically my whole library) that I use every day, thinking how wonderful it would be to be able to carry dozens of books in my pocket, plus have a calendar, an address book, ect.

Sounds good, right?

Well..the display is small and although I have excellent eyesight, I REALLY disliked trying to read any lengthy document off it. Although I painstakingly bookmarked every entry in a massive reference work I had loaded on, the search feature was cumbersome, and in the end I found myself pulling up the files on my computer or just grabbing the actual book off the shelf. I already have an address book on my cell phone, and far from convenient, it was just a hassle for me to enter my schedule into my computer, transfer it to my Palm, and refer to it from there. Paper works better for me, and more and more I found myself leaving at home what was supposed to be the one-size-fits-all solution to everything.

So I sold it while I could still recoup most of my investment.

Please understand, I'm not trying to dissuade you from buying one, but just advising that you really know what you need it for first, and then be prepared to have an extra piece of junk to haul around everywhere.

I don't usually get suckered into ANY needless purchase. I'm far too cynical to be swept away by any ad campaign and I NEVER allow the media to convince me I "need" the latest thing--but this hooked me. Plus, I have several friends who are in the same boat--their PDAs are now paperweights.

I'd like to know how many PDA owners here actually USE the **** things? And I don't mean when it's new and exciting or every few days or from time to time--I mean daily, can't-leave-home-without-it use.

Anybody?

Anyway, sorry for going on so long, but this is a subject very fresh in mind and recent in experience. If you have a use for one and are prepared to carry it everywhere, I recommend the Palm m500. Just be sure you'll really use it--not just like the idea of it.

palm PDAs? I've given up on my m505. Had loads of problems when it comes to hotsynching.. and to make matters worse, this baby had been discontinued. Being a loyal palm OS user since the pilot was introduced, I'm actually waiting for a more stable unit before I commit again. Been thinking about the Tungsten-T, but that will have to wait..

I'm looking at either the 130 or 125, as they are cheaper and wil run on XP(NT 4.0 based). The 125 is only $170 right now... just got the price on the 130 as 400 - 100 mail in.

The reason I'm looking at getting one is:
*I usually carry a small notebook or FMP, but paper and gel pens(don't use regular ink pens, personal thing) aren't cheap(pads for the FMP are $5 each).
*when I carried a backpack, I usually had 2months of notes typed up, as well as current assignments, and other sheets in there(taking up quite a bit of room)
*out of school(until sept 03), and I don't carry a backpack, so notes get shoved in my inside coat pocket, and fishing through a dozen peices of paper to find an appointment or a number is a bitch
*this will save me from looking stuff up later, as I can download thesorus and dictionary into it. An extra card or 2 can be carried to add an encyclopedia as well. I'm used to having extra cards for my camera.

I have a phonenumber list in my cell(up to 100 numbers, have 15 right now), and a timer there as well.

I used to carry a small electric organizer, but got fed up having to clear the appointment thing and phone list after about 2-3months(small little memories). The spell checker was a nice thing though.

I use my Palm device constantly and it stays with me at all times. The Palm serves as my calendar, address book, and notepad. It has also turned out to do just about everything else a laptop computer can do, if not always as well. And it is a whole lot more portable than even the smallest laptop.

My Palm device is actually a Sony Clie PEG-T665C, which offers color and a higher resolution screen than most Palms. With that display, and some tweaking of the fonts, I find that I enjoy reading on it. I keep an enormous amount of refence material on my 128M memory stick, including Word documents (WordSmith), Excel spreadsheets (MiniCalc), PDF files (Acrobat), HTML (iSilo), and plenty of fiction books for when I'm bored.

Getting the most out of any PDA requires a certain amount of investment in time. The data has to be in there before it can be useful to you. However, the payoff can be considerable.
