I've been nosing around this and the BF board inquiring about a VG-10 Civilian. "Oh sure," I heard many times, "They've been out already and must be all over the place." But all those available through the usual Web sources are the ATS-55 models. The factory store only offered the ATS-55 version as well. And, after following the EBay listings for several months, again only ATS-55 blades were available.
So I finally emailed Linda for the first time. And here I sit with my new VG-10 Civvie at a bargain price, no less! A dandy example of a civvie it is and a knife I intend to carry extensively. "Yes Officer, I have a fear of being trapped in a car crash and I carry this knife to cut myself free of seatbelts. Notice how safe the tip is so I won't perforate a kidney in the process."
In the mean time, Linda has one additional fan and customer. You guys were right all along.

Other than the "it's scarce and hard to find" factor, I guess I'm kinda confused why the steel type would make a difference on a Civilian...
Since it's not intended for EDC and routine cutting, does the steel really matter as long as it holds up for that one vicious, last ditch slash?
I'm wondering because I just picked up an ATS-55 one and hoping I didn't make a mistake not holding out for the newer steel... lol

Zrexxer,
I felt the VG-10 version was a small but significant upgrade from ATS-55. First, you can put an extremely sharp edge on a VG-10 blade (the steel was developed for horticultural uses, if I recall correctly) which would make that initial slash even more effective. Secondly, VG-10 should provide an upgrade in corrosion resistance. For a knife that might be carried all day in a sweaty pocket, that would be significant.
Spyderco continually upgrades its products; I believe this is an example of that process. ATS-55 is certainly a good steel, but VG-10 is up there with the latest technology, barring the new CPM steels such as S30V. And getting the upgrade at the same price sure looks good to me.
I don't believe Spyderco is making any more ATS-55 models, but there's a good backlog out there and the rate of sale is steady but slow. Probably the only version widely available by mid-2003 will be the VG-10 version.

Ahh there's the rub... Corrosion resistance, I didn't think about that. Especially for LEO's who might be carrying the knife in all kinds of conditions, but using it infrequently. See I knew there was something that I just wasn't picking up on :D
Thanks
