You may want to look into stropping. There are paddles or you can do it free hand. There are plenty of how to videos on youtube.

I have a edge pro now. What I do is hit the edge with the 3000 grip tape to bring it back to hair popping. I have some leather. So I'm going to glue it to a EP blank and get some compound.

I've never really seen much benefit to using a honing compound. I've always been a free hand sharpener using stones and an old piece of leather. With my BM fixed blade it's usually a hard Arkansas stone if the edge is sort of dull and a short strap of leather to smooth it out.

I own a lot more Cold Steels than Spydercos- most of those use AUS-8A which doesn't really hold the shaving sharp edge as long as VG-10 seems to. A couple strokes on a dry strop and they're good as new.

The point really of using a strop is to not take any metal away from your knife. If you catch it just as soon as it doesn't shave, no stones needed.

Another VG-10 fan here :) Good edge retention, corrosion resitance and ease of sharpening what can you possibly want more? Not to menton that a few stropes on my jeans restore the edge to its hair popping sharp state ;)

That's a really clever idea....once i know what i'm doing with stropping i'll have to give this a try.

I wouldn't worry about learning how to strop first. I've done this before on jeans or canvas pants. It's less like stropping since there's not a whole lot on the average pant leg to remove metal, but more like steeling a blade and realigning the edge.

Well, it came today. Man this knife is big compared to my delica! I think it will be perfect to for what I'm using it for. The black clip will come off tonight to get polished and sharpen/polish 30/40 as well. I was hoping for the blue to be little darker ( people said it's darker in person) but from what I can see, it's just a little darker than a baby blue.

I like the size of the blade. It's longer than most stuff I cut so it's perfect for me. The FFG blade is sweet (not as weak as I thought it would be). Just cut up an apple and it did better than my SG delica.

The real question will be how I will like the VG-10. We will see over the next few weeks. As I said before, I will get a feel for how easy it is to get a razor edge.

Pictures will follow later.

Thanks,

Count me as another big fan of VG-10. I like it because it gets sharp quick and is easy to get an edge back on it while I'm still out in the field. It keeps its edge for a long time, but it isn't as tough, hard, or resilient as some of the other higher-end steels.

It is my favorite all-around steel for general use.

Got her all polished up! Sharpening was a breeze. Got
the clip sanded down well.

My first Delica was VG10 and the first thing i did was take it fishing, and while waiting for some action i whittled a pile of hard wood shavings. I'd say i shaved enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket or so before it wouldn't shave hair off my arm anymore, but it would still cut wood with relative ease. Spyderco has a lot of us spoiled on exotic steels...it's real easy to overlook VG10 but it really is an excellent steel. It's light years ahead of the crap i grew up with.

Hi .357 mag,

Thanx for the trust and the input. Let us know what you think of it.

We've been refining that design for 12 years. Many improvements and mold changes, made new molds a few times as well. Refinements come mostly from using the design and discussing feedback from our customers on the forums.

No, thank you for the great products. It's always good to know that the owner of a company cares as much as you.

That's one of the reasons I'm a Spyderco fan :) The people that design and make the knives use them and apply that experience to the design :D

VG-10 is one of the most people friendly steels that I know of. I really enjoy that as Spyderco treats it vg-10 is extremely tough :)
