Gunting Question

#1

Post by CKE »

With all the rave reviews about this knife it has really got me liking this blade. I held on once and thought it was nice. Alot of people say they are good EDC but with all the posts on how sharp and pointed they are in different places it makes me wonder???

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi CKE the Gunting is most definitely a very cool tool ! Yes I am one of the converted. The best way to carry a Gunting is in a sheath which u can get from Frank at Skunkworks. I carry a Gunting everyday usually the Crmipt or the drone hardly even notice it's there

Hey Steve. I am just curious as to the sharpness of the non lethal edges and corners. I assume the knife does not bite the hand while holding it. Meaning the handle and the contours of it. I am interested in this as an EDC.

Don't know how to edit. Did you order your Skunkworks sheath online?

Hi CKE
on the the live blade and the Crmipt the outside edges(ramp and horn)are quite sharp. You sure wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of them but the Gunting is very comfortable in your hand for the vast majority. I think since Ive been reading the forums here and syderco on bladeforums Ive only seen one person that thought the handle was a little small. He must of had huge hands...... but for me and all I've trained with it has been fine, very comfortable. A little common sense and u wont hurt your self. However 2 important points 1 NEVER open a live Gunting on ur leg. or u wll cut yourself 2 It 's a top idea to buy a drone to train with first so you can get the most out of ur Gunting once u get one in ur hand you won't want to put it down , so do it safely and get a drone
I got my sheath direct from Bram, so no I didn't buy it on line. Bram says Frank is a top guy so that is good enough for me. Frank's website is http://members.ispwest.com/doughunt/skunkworks/ Take a look he has some top quality kit

Hey Steve, thanks for all your help. I would love a drone but funds are tight. I will use the Gunting EDC mainly, but if I can I will get the drone and I would love to take a course but there are none in my area. I think I will get the videos and eventually get a drone and then bring the Gunting up to its full potential( or to the best of my abilities...hahaha)Thanks again I am going to contact Frank about the sheath.
Seen that you are from Australia. that is one place that I am going to travel to one day. Even if it is for two weeks I have to go there. I think it would be like a warm Canada. Being both commonwealth countries and the such. Well take care have a good Christmas and thanks for all your help. I think I will be ordering after the new year!

One more thing what are the different numbers above the Spydie hole mean? I didn't find out what they meant at gunting-museum.com.

Gunting is great. Yes the edges of the ramp are "sharp", but not like a knife edge, think of it like the edges of ski's. all the corners and edges are right angles (90 degrees) but milled very fine. IF you rake bare skin with the ramp of a live "G" you'll break skin. The Crmipt has the ramp edges rounded over slightly, and the drone has a completely rounded ramp. The horns are sharp on the Crmipt and Gunting, rounded on the Drone. (In fact the horns on my Crmipt are sharper then those on my Gunting. Probably because the Crmipts were hand assembled in small batches, the Guntings were more mass produced.

Don't open it on you leg! (or your body.)

I think that if your a Guntaholic you should be legally required to put the above warning in your signature line <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

LOL

The numbers above the Spydie hole are from the first couple batches of the Drones. Bram insisted on the Drone, But Spyderco wasn't sure how they would sell, so they made up a small batch and numbered them. If you have one with a number, it just means that it's an earlier one.

CKE, you have a good Christmas and enjoy ur Gunting when u get it I know u will. Check out www.WarriorNorth.com and speak to Steve he's Brams representative in Canada for training with the Gunting. I know it hard but don't forget the Drone when u can afford it. You really will benefit because can't safely train with ur Live blade.

My prize posession is my live Gunting no.231 I couldn,t afford the pair at first so my Drone is 668. The drone is an great piece of kit in its own right and an excellent self defence tool.

I can't stress enough never open a live Gunting on ur leg.

Best wishes Steve

Hmmmmm I got on this a little late but yeah contact Steve for all your Canadian Gunting queries and needs. The sheath from skunkworks is top notch too. Drawing the G from it's sheath has become one of my favourite knife 'hobbies'. I carry mine daily in its sheath and it has not been a bother.

I have a friend with whom I practise the draws with but I still kick her ***! I'm sure she'll be along shortly to deny that!

Hard and sharp isn't such a bad way to go...
I like HARD and I like "sharp"....
I use the Gunting as an EDC tool...I mean it is a Spyderco edged tool..
Yes I use it as a SDR..SElf Deense Response tool and I designed it to be an MBC- Martial Blade Craft tool..

But its a user friendly tool..

be safe
