Thanks for the report Sequimite, Spyderco always seems to 'sprinkle' every show with new models - the Cat/Chicago were not in Amsterdam. Thanks for sharing.

The Southard Flipper is a sweet knife. It reminds me of the Rock Lobster, but with smoother flowing lines. I'm excited for the Chicago and Cat replacements. I hope they maintain a lower price point, as they would be fun to purchase with the intent to put my own scale materials (wood, stone, etc.) on. If they have the same shape as before, they would almost be like the Ambitious and Persistence (as noted by phillipsted), but with choils on them. I love finger choils, so it would be an improvement over their Chinese counterparts in my book.

and the original cat and chicago were S30V so thats a big upgrade.

I really like my chicago that I have not just because it is so small. The tiny leaf blade is really usable, has a nice point to it, and is FFG S30v. Not much better. If these new g10 versions retain the wire clips and the jimping and choil they will sell like crazy. It will be hard to say if they will match the price point of the earlier ones because I am not sure if enough even got out to determine a price point.

Mr Southard - thanks for the pic of your flipper. I never liked the idea of a Spyder flipper but I have to say your design is very refined. Would love to see it in production.

Agreed -- the Cat is one of my favorite Spydies.

Let's hope the prototype becomes a real product.

Ooh, I missed the picture until someone else mentioned it directly (I'm a bit scatterbrained I guess :P).

I'm digging the design. I'd love to see it produced in that exact same color G-10 and the same finish on the Ti (I assume it's Ti on the lock side..?). The overall shape looks nice and ergonomic, and I also really like the high hollow grind, especially on a long, slightly upswept blade shape like that!

What can I say? I like it :D

PS--Any approximation of the blade length? It's hard to tell from the photo. Something like 3-3.5"?

Thanks for posting the update, Sequimite.

I'm excited for the Southard flipper. I have yet to own a flipper but have always been curious to try one out. The slim design and opening hole make this a winner for me. I hope it makes it to production.

Forgot to add that I'm excited for the new Gayle Bradley designs. I have been holding off on getting a GB because of the weight. If the new version retains the M4 steel (or some other high-end steel, like CTS-XHP, CTS 20CP, S90V, etc) then I'll definitely pick one up. Lighter is better on folding knives, IMO.

I'm excited to see more of the Air as well. :)

very nice knife brad. It looks like it would make a great edc. Nice, slim, and compact. Is that a g10 over travel stop on the ti side pivot screw? Never saw that used before but it maintains the sleekness of the overall packge.

The only thing I added in my brief recounting of my chat with Phil Wilson in the Off-Topic forum was:

1. His stuff is quintessentially elegant.
2. Phil really wants S90V for the South Fork, but it has been hard to get.
3. He wouldn't mind using S110V, but it is nearly impossible to get.

I didn't ask and I don't think there were any sheaths on his table, not that Spyderco would necessarily use the same type anyway. The South Fork on the Spyderco table ahd no sheath either.

I hope that this style of knife would come with a leather sheath.
