best overlooked places to find spyderco
best overlooked places to find spyderco
Other than the known retailers, bladeforums, ebay, and sometimes edcforums. What are some of the places where you can find spydies for sale?
I'm always looking at garage/estate sales and gun shops. I've dropped into some pawn shops too. None of those have ever (in my experience) seen results.
I did drop by an established Army Surplus store which had a black Calypso Jr ZDP-189 for $110. Not exactly a screaming deal but I got excited and bought it. So far the $60 NIB Lil Temp is just a fantasy. sigh.
There are some retailers that sell discontinued models at a premium but you can find ones that miss the public eye. If you want it sometimes it's a necessary evil.

One of the local pawn shops around her has a well... I mean WELL (ab)used Spyderco on display. I inquired about it a while back...the tag was about 150% of MSRP, but the guy was willing to cut me a deal of about 75% of MSRP. I contemplated telling him I could order one NIB and with shipping it would still be less than his asking price, but I figured he would assume I was full of beans and trying to haggle.
I said thanks, but no thanks.
Another Pawn shop I went to said that they NEVER EVER buy/sell Chinese, Taiwanese, or Japanese knives (because "those things are crap").
I think people around here do not understand knives the same way I do.
I usually end up buying NIB models from one of the fine dealers I use...I have never felt that I overpaid, and never got anything suspicious. If I did, I know I can get the problem remedied easily enough.
Not what you are looking for, but my 2 cents...

If you find a Spyderco honey hole, let me know. :D
Best Spyderco store I ever found was a pawn shop with a small retail knife selection. The owner at some point around 1999 or 2000 had purchased a variety of Spyderco models and from the looks of it, they had been sitting on the shelves ever since. They were all priced MSRP+ but accounting for inflation and yearly price increases were a pretty good deal. I snagged a couple, but someone else must have cleaned out the place, because the last time I went in the shelves were pretty bare.

My local Knife shop has lots of cool Spydies. 2 Spyderenchs, 1 White Endura, 2 Pink Enduras, Delicas and 1 Pink Native, 2 SE & PE Navigators, 1 Volpe, 1 Spyderfly, 1 SE Brown FRN Matriarc, 1 T-Mag, 2 Orange Militaries and probably a few more I cant remember. I feel like there are a few I should get or regret it later. Maybe you guys could help me figure out which ones I should scoop up.
Never ever found a decent deal anywhere other then you identified in your question. Have seen alot for sale at gun shows, never a good deal compared to the retailers I use. Nothing but terrible deals at pawn shops and flea markets.
Spend that energy on over time or other extras at work and buy at the normal places.

Believe it or not I see them fairly often in antique malls, usually mixed in with a bunch of old Case and Buck knives. The dealers probably pick them up in estate sales and such. Only problem is they usually don't know enough about them to price them fairly. I can show you a Tenacious sitting in a display case at a local mall that's marked at $75. It's been there a long time.

I have found a few at garage sales and sometimes they even had boxes. I have picked some up at actions, but those are always a crap shoot like anything else. Another great place to try are small town hardware stores and such. Many times they will have older models that have been sitting around for sometime. These places often are not spyderco dealers but they will purchase them from wholesalers to be sold in their stores.

I wouldn't call it one of the BEST overlooked places but you can get Spyderco knives from Wal Mart. I don't think the stores carry them but you can go to walmart.com, order a knife and pick it up at the store you request it be shipped to. There is no shipping charge. I looked at a couple of Delicas and the prices were high but only a little higher after you add the shipping most inet sites charge. One good thing about Wal Mart is if there is a problem you just take the product to the Customer Service Center in the store near your home instead of shipping the knife to an inet site.

Lebaron does have some spydies but they are usually a bit overpriced. You may want to check out S&R Knives, better selection, better service and better prices. Not sure if it fits the thread cause they are pretty consistent price wise with most on-line retailers. The benefit is you get to handle the knives and they are fairly knowledgeable.rororo64 wrote:An outdoors shop in Markham Ontario called Lebaron has quite a few Spydercos.
I am not affiliated with them in an way shape of form, just have had good experiences there.

There's a thread floating around in the "off-topic" section (I can't do a search to provide a link cause I'm on my iPod right now) that goes into great detail on the spydieguys subject, but long story short, lots of people started having experiences that were not positive like yours and even some that ended up with no knife arriving at all.wingspar wrote:What happened to Spydieguys.com? I bought a Spyderco from them once, and it got shipped within the hour.
