Police SS question

#1

Post by ArtBM »

Hi, I'm new to this forum, love Spyderco's so I thought I would join. I recently purchased a Police SS that has an etching of a spider web on the side, also a spider. I thought I saw these years ago but can find nothing on them and when they were manufactured. Any help appreciated. Art

Knowing the blade steel would help narrow it down a lot. I believe the spiderweb etch was done aftermarket, and it seems like several small batches were done.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Spyderco has done that engraving for quite a while, so no way of dating a specific knife unless you have the box. One dealer use to order small batches of just about every all stainless model Spyderco made and sell them on eBay. Pretty sure Spyderco would still engrave them that way if a dealer ordered a few.

This thread has some more info on it.

HE is a date code, where A=1 and so forth. First letter is the month, second the year, so your knife left the factory in August 2005. If I had to guess, it was originally purchased either from Sawyer's Cutlery, or their eBay persona "razorsharpknife". They use to order batches of every all stainless Spyderco, in every edge type they were available in, with that engraving and sold most of them on eBay. IIRC, I helped a fellow collector in New Zealand who specialized in the Police acquire all three edge types from them. Again, IIRC, the upcharge at that time for the engraved ones was $15, not sure what it would be now.

Sorry for OT, but is it possible to change SS handles to FRN/G-10 in Police or Endura?

Only if you're willing to pay a custom maker to rebuild one for you. Be much less expensive to buy the version you want and sell the SS one. In fact, it would probably cost you slightly less to buy the version you want and give the SS one to a friend.

My friend had a SS Police, I found the handles rather slippery in general use. I'd hate to think what they'd be like in a sweaty hand!

3M grip tape = Poor-man's G-10 in subtle gray. Three bucks turned my SS Police from slip to grip.
