Figured I would bring this thread back to keep the idea alive.

Personally, I think with the steel being Super Blue a blue handle should be used. Micarta is of course my first choice. Royal blue G10 would be my second. If CF was to be used something like what Donut found would work great.

I know it would probably not happen and would drive the cost way up, but a contoured blue black polished G10 used on the Bark River would be beautiful on a Caly 3.5

I agree and I think I posted something similar, but I think Sal has posted otherwise. :)

I do like carbon fiber, but vote to go G-10 on this one. Darker Blue would be my first choice, not super crazy about the gray unless it is darker than what I've seen before. Orange would be pretty cool. That color has grown on my with my urban.

One great thing about gray G-10 is that it is easy to dye blue.

Those scales look really nice. I don't know if spyderco does micarta in anything other than smooth, so that's something to think about. A lot of people seem to complain a lot about smooth scales.

I am just wondering if "AFI"=steelnut? :) :D
"Aficionado" means "enthusiast," basically. It's from the Spanish word "afición." See below:

Translation of AFICIÓN

1
: enthusiasm, penchant, fondness <afición al deporte : love of sports>
2
pasatiempo : hobby

Even if possible, that would only work if the handle was contoured so that the layers showed and the scales for the Caly 3.5 will probably be flat slabs.

Not me. I may try a mottled effect though. I may put custom scales on this one anyway so if the dying doesn't look good I have plan B.

No...

1. That G10 is black/blue laminate; you can't replicate that
2. G10 doesn't dye as well as other materials
3. Surface-dyed handle materials never have the kind of brightness to their color that you can get when you dye the epoxy "in the pot"

My wife and one of my sons are artists so I will drop the problem in their laps. I'm assuming that some process of wax on the handle and multiple dippings will do the trick.

Well, Sal said so, for starters :D and Tom's a dealer, so I think you can figure that's the best intel available right now. :)
