I feel the need for a new spydie, Suggestions?

#1

Post by PsychGrad »

I feel the need for a new spydie, any suggestions? I tend to prefer smaller knives as I feel more comfortable about carrying them. However, I have thought about a military. I've heard there is some question about its tip strenght.

The following are already in my collection:

Native frn

Almite slotted navigator

2 ss dragonflys

Micarta Jester

Kiwi

Thanks,

How about the FRN Calypso jr. ? I heard only good things about this little one. Though discontinued, it keeps appearing now and then on Ebay.

PsychGrad/Clay -

I know this may sound "prejudicial"

on BOTH point(s)( pun intended )

but how about a cricket (PE-or-SE take

your pick ) from glasshartt for $35

plus USPS shipping? If so, e-mail her

(Linda) : GlassHartt@aol.com

Just my two cents ( Luke 21:2-4 )

Clay, except for the Native (medium sized), your collection consists of small Spydies. How about something bigger or more massive, like Military, Chinook or Lil' Temperance?

I know the Lil' Temperance features a blade of aprox. the same size as the Native. However, it feel much bigger and sturdier (MBC Class and Compression Lock).

How about a fixed blade like the Perrin or Temperance or wait for the new Ronin to be released soon.

Have a hawkbill blade? The Spyderhawk is just out.

Go for that Military. The tip is plenty strong. Strong as or stronger than most other "tactical" folders in this size range. Certainly as strong as the fabled Chris Reeves "Sebenza" (I've owned both).

My considered opinion would be to RUN (not walk) to your dealer and obtain the SpyderHawk!

Alex i agree the FRN Calypso Jr in VG-10 is hard to beat, I had offered to swap 1 of my 2 and now i'm thankful the trade didn't happen.
1 vote here for the Rookie altho it's also discontinued it make the perfect in between EDC. Ron

Recommend you find the nearest knifestore that sells the entire line. And basically feel them up!! And the one that feels right is the one for you!!!!

I believe that every Knut should have at least one Military. I have two now(thanks ATE ), but of the two, my CE Millie is my "never say die" EDC. In other words, I don't EVER leave home without it.

Other than the Millie I would also suggest the Salsa. I just picked up a couple today(blue and green) and have to say that these lil' knives are CL!!

As mentioned in a few other posts, the FRN Calypso Jr. is also a very tough little cutter. My PlainEdge Calypso Jr. is another one of my favorites, mainly because of its' ergonomics. It may, however, be a little harder to find since it is a discontinued Spydie.

The Lum Chinese folder is a very classy that packs alot of blade in its' Almite coated aluminum handle. This one is an AWESOME slicer because of the thin flat ground blade.

IMHO, you can't go wrong with any Spydie that you choose. As long as YOU are comfortable with it.

Good Luck

Psych Grad-

I wanted you to kow i gave quite a bit of thought before I wanted to post my answer.
And i just can't help myself.

But a physc major wanting a knife - that's kind of scary!! So i figured something in that line of work - like a note pad, couch, or maybe those "fungo bats" made out of foam so people can beat one another without hurting themselves and working out there anger.

By the way has your class ever tied to analyze this affictions we have for these spyderco knives??? There has to be a name for it, something like "compulsive spydie syndrome" but it really doesn't matter it's obviously incurable.....

Anyway just messin' with ya. You got big selection to choose from, it's just whatever strikes your fancy.....

MILITARY!I was hanging Masonite sideing on the addition to the house that has been going on for almost a year.It gets finished Monday.Anyway the carpenter that was here was fitting in a peice and needed it shaved down to fit into the grove of the window. The Military went through it like hot butter, something that his box knife with a new blade was haveing trouble with.He said he had never seen a knife that cut like that.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm really leaning toward the military. As a big spydie fan I think it is a must. PE or SE?

Ken, I try to keep my spydies away from clients. I think your right, some type of spyderco compulsion should be added to the DSM-IV.

delicrazy, baby is doing fine. Although she is not old enough to understand X-MAS I think I have enough enthusiasm for her. This is my favorite time of the year. Having kids really makes the holidays special.

Thanks,

I'm enjoying my CE(50/50) millie... about 2.5" PE, 1.5" SE... just enough SE to use on boxes and branches(while putting gravel down this summer, our neighbour's tree was overhanging, dropping leaves and flowers, so I was told to lop off about a foot), and I'm used to working with 3" and under PE s(Delica, Calypso jr, Merlin, Dragonfly).

I've had mine for just over 3 months, and it hasn't left my side since... even sleep in jogging pants(it's a bit chilly in the basement) with it clipped right behind my right hip...

It may seem big at first, but after about 2 weeks of handling the millie, it just made my other ones seem REAL small. I took a couple days to get used to the almost plastic feel of the g-10, and now want a few more with it.

Since you are (were?) looking for a "smaller" Spydie, you NEED a Delica. IF you also want a larger Spydie, get yourself a Police model.
