What should be my next Spydie?

#1

Post by Derty »

I'm looking for a new Spydie but I just can't decide what to get. I've been looking for 2 weeks now online and still nothing. My budget is $150 and I'd love a knife to fit in well with my others but give me variation. So please help me decide on my next purchase. I've been bitten pretty bad as I've only been collecting Spydies for 2 months.

My Spyderco's

Orange Manix 2
CF ZDP-189 Stretch
Sage 1
White Endura
Foliage Green FFG Endura
ZDP-189 FFG Endura
ZDP-189 Delica
Emerson Delica
Dragonfly 2 PE
Dragonfly 2 FG G-10
Gayle Bradley
Native 3 PE
Stag Kiwi
Orange VG-10 ladybug
FG Ladybug

My vote is either the Manix, GB or the Stretch but just get the blue FRN version. 1/3 less price and looks great.

Hmm, you could do with a few more leaf-blades - what about the Caly 3 CF ZDP or the Caly 3.5 .... or you could pick up quite a few UKPK FRNs ... or perhaps a G10 UKPK (discontinued but possibly still available) or CF UKPK :)
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

After the glowing review of the Superleaf, I'd think about it if I were you. On the other hand, no Millie or paramillitary, both are a must have. Finally, no Ed Schempp love? I still see the Persian red micarta sprint around here and there for not much beyond your budget, or you could go Persian 2 and be well within.

I would recommend the Sage 2 or Sage 3.

A Military or Paramilitary 2 would be good too.

Oh right...read that wrong sorry!

Ok well how about the Street Beat. Just got one and love it. Or maybe the PPT just to give you something a little bit different.

G10 dragonfly rocks. I have the DF 2 also. Personally I think the DF 2 is a better worker, if you have dirty hands at work. The FG G10 tends to be very vulnerable to dirt. Allthough you can always clean it w/ WD 40. Personally I prefer the DF2 if you are going to use it like I said. For office work, the G10.

Zulu!

I just got one after a long look myself. Get it from CS and you could stay way within your budget.

Everyone needs a Military.
And this is coming from a guy who's regular EDC is something with a 2" blade. :D
Para1 or 2 is also a good choice.

On the other hand I don't see anything Schempp on that list either :D
How about a Persian2, small or large. A Lum Chinese (regular or large) would also bring something ethnic to the mix. :p
Or maybe one of the odd ones: Chokwe, Zulu, PPT

If you're having such a hard time deciding I say don't buy anything YET, sit and wait to see what comes around and see if anything clicks. :)
You shouldn't force the addiction, it's too powerfull as it is... :o

Large Lum is my vote. I've only had mine for a few days and am finding it's a delightfull, well built, easy carrying and diverse large folder suitable for a variety of tasks. There's a reason the blade shape has been around for millenia.

Urban would be a good for for a smaller one :)

I second the Street Beat. Absolutely fabulous knife and it will fill the niche of "My Spyderco fixed-blade" when you already have plenty of good folders. The Bushcraft is another ridiculously good fixed-blade knife.

Maybe a Sage 2 or Military?

Or you could go for unique blades and get both the Assist and Spyderhawk.
