Special Edition Spyderfly or was it modified?..

#1

Post by MMArtie »

I have seen this picture of aSpyderfly but have never seen it anywhere else with those handles (black powder coat w/polished surface,) although the person who owns it said he bought it at a Spyderco Outlet in Co, nothing more was known. I'm almost 100% sure it's a genuine Spyderco but did/does the outlet re-sell knives, especially if modified from original, perhaps when they did the recall/refund? If not, it stands to reason that this was made in-house at Spyderco. I'm just curious about it. :confused:

Thanks,

i haven't seen one like that but that doesn't mean that spyderco didn't make it that way.

Never saw one like that before. Definitely was not something Spyderco sold through their regular dealer network. The three "official" versions were plain VG-10 blade with grey handles, plain 440C blade with grey handles, and rainbow anodized 440C blade and handle. Only Sal, or someone from Spyderco can say for sure if the one you have is legit. I know Spyderco sometimes experiments with alternative coatings, just not sure if they did so in this case, or if they ever sell the "test" knives through SFO.

Might be one of those that just ended up on an employees hands and later on went into the secondary market.

The one thing I can say for certain is that it would not have been done and resold by Spyderco after the recall. The whole point of that was the Feds claiming they were illegal, so any knives sent back had to be turned over to ICE for "destruction".

Thanks for the replies, still searching though. Didn't think they would resell after the recall, just trying to cover all bases, I believe it could have just been modified but I was told it was bought directly from Spyderco by them. I know that may not be the truth but I'm happy with the purchase fully so don't see a reason for them to lie, going to see if I can get any more info from them.

The KD on the box does not appear in this list, does any one have a more extensive list, if there is more?

When it comes to communication about Spyderco knives, some acronyms are used that often can puzzle you if you’ve never seen them before. Explanation for the box label:
B01P: B is the letter used for balisongs, 01 means it's the first
B01P=Spyderfly, plain edge
The letters on the right side of the label signify birthdate: the first letter is the month, the second the year. They started using this system in 2000.
K=11=November
D=4=2004
So it was made November 2004. :)
