Manix 2 took a plunge
Manix 2 took a plunge
My Manix 2 just fell off the edge of a desktop about 3-4 ft off the ground. After picking it up and inspecting it the knife seemed fine, however, now i cant close it as easily.
What I would usually do was hold the knife at a 180 degree angle and pull back the CBBl with both fingers and the blade would just drop down.
After the drop the blade stays still. Is there a way i could fix this?
Should I lube the knife, tighten or loosen the pivot screws, or adjust the knife in any way to bring it back to buttery smoothness?
This was my favorite knife to play around with but now closing it one handed is a pain

Yeah I'm feeling a little wiggle when i move the cage side to side, might be the ball bearing
Any way i can fix this at home or am I going to have to send it in?

Nope it was all the way closed. But the drop did cause it to open about halfway out.SteelDragon wrote:Just curious, was the blade open when it fell off the desk?

I did manage to throw my manix 2 several times while practicing weak hand zip tie deployments. Once I even thought I lost the tip when it stuck quivering into a hardwood floor.

Yeh, there is a probably a "worst" way for it to land.SteelDragon wrote:I think I remember reading about that, I guess fragile was a bad choice of words. Maybe it's just touchy when it lands just right or wrong.

Hmm. I dropped mine (orange sprint) from about 3-4 ft to hardwood floor, spinning down. Absolutely no mark on it. Looked extremely close every single angle possible but there isn't even a single smudge on G-10 or the metal parts. Is it possible to take it a part and reassemble to make sure everything is aligned?

Thanks for all the replies everyone
Looks like I'm going to have to send in the knife, I'd rather not mess around and disassemble it.

I think people are reading into this a bit too much.
It could be just a screw tightening or something that will work itself out with a few openings/closings. Without looking at the knife it really cant be determined. Sending it in is a great idea if you have any concerns.
While a 3-4 foot drop is a lot of force depending on how something lands. I've seen people beat the living crap out of this knife and it still stands up quite well. The alignment change was to strengthen the knife towards overstrikes. While an extremely stout knife in most regards this test as demonstrated by Ankerson puts an insane level of stress on certain components.
It was great for Spyderco to take a look at the engineering and attempt to take these pressures into consideration for future production. Just don't confuse a specific action creating hundreds if not thousands of pounds of force with a knife dropping and hitting the ground. It's not a fragile or weak knife, even the pre-change ones.
Goodluck with the knife. Keep us posted with your findings!

This is great advice. The first thing that many people do is start to take something completely apart.Teddy Thompson wrote:I'd wash, dry, and re-lube before doing anything more drastic. Bit of crud picked up in the pivot area and adding drag seems more likely than damage to the knife.
With cleaning, lubing, and mild adjustment you can fix a ton of things. I've had stiff knives transform after a bit of oil/compressed air and a few dozen openings while watching TV.
kk just followed up with some of the other ideas you guys suggested
So far, cleaning/lubing hasn't had any effect but I have a good feeling that tightening/loosening the pivot might work.
Now I just have to go buy a set of torx screws
