The Gunting...?
The Gunting...?
Hi all,
Since Allen send me the Civie (Thanx ATE!<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>)
I have been thinking about the MBC blades a lot. If I could afford one, my next spydie would be a Gunting. How does this MBC work as a utility blade? Saw a post once on BF where someone claimed that this knife could do anything any other knife could -But hey, so can a tin of tomatoes!

I've heard Bram say that a friend of his skinned a black bear with his gunting. I love mine, it's a great knife. Besides, as you said, anything with a sharp edge will make a good utility knife. Another thing in the guntings favor is that it works great as a impact tool, in fact it does this better than any other closed knife.
I have a Gunting, and yes, the blade is useful for a wide range of tasks, not just MBC. Except for the ramp, the blade is very conventional. It is my EDC, except for certain circumstances when I may want a specific blade for a certain reason. It works best with a sheath, since the clip's position causes the knife to "ride high" when clipped into a pocket. This does not bother me at all, since I do not trust a pocket clip to retain a valuable knife under strenuous circumstances or when moving through areas with brush or vines.

Hello,
Strongly recommend the Gunting as an all purpose knife. It will do anything you ask it to do.
I regret to see the Gunting placed exclusively in the martial arts category as occurs occasionally because it has so many other uses outside the martial arts arena.
I have had mine for more than a year and continue to be very pleased with it. It has done everything I asked of it and has never let me down. A great utility knife- none better.
Good luck in your purchase.

I think "ol' ugly<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>" is one fine <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.
ANY GOOD, WELL MADE KNIFE WILL MORE
THAN ACCOMPLISH IT's TASK & THEN SOME!
My personal "hypocritical" opinion :
I just think that practical
"appendage" on the blade makes it ugly
as home-made sin <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
VOXIE - BEWARE THE IDES OF DECEMBER!

That is a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> that grows on you. It looks ugly at first but the more you hear about it the more you want one. I am getting one for Christmas. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I think it would be a great EDC.

Round Eye Knife and Tool's Escalator was a proto-Gunting (proto meaning before and not as refined as the current Spyderco Gunting). Escalator meaning to escalate to lethal force if necessay. Bram Frank and Bob Taylor put out a custom collaboration of sorts, Rolling Lock and the whole bit. REKAT had a corrospending trainer/drone as well. I have seen and experienced the Escalator and it is nothing like the Spyderco Gunting. Be glad Sal and Bram got together to create one great tool.
The Gunting is a good EDC (Every Day Carry)or SDR ( Self Defense Response)or MBC ( Martial Blade Craft) tool depending on how you see it..
If you wear gloves its easy to open via the ramp aka a straight razor and to hold onto the ergonomic handle..
forward or reverse grip you cannot slip onto the blade..
You can use pressure on the ramp to do delicate tip cutting..
Greg has used the ramp side to clean scales off of fish..he uses the tool as his fishing knife because of the grip..even scally, wet and bloody he can't slip onto the blade..
it cuts mean fillets!
Yes my guys and me have dressed down deer and boar..works quite well thank you..great control of the tool..Frank has used it as his hunyting knife and two of his friends won't give the knife back..they love using it outdoors for hunting...
Yes we use it as a tool..I've actually hammered with ramp..
Hey..I mean its a SPYDERCO Product so its going to do the knife thing quite well..it is SV60 ( old CPM 440V)
Yes it rides high..but the clip is wide and has no protuding edge..( won't catch on things) and its really strong & spread out over a wide area to hold the tool in place..
it rides high so you can access it properly..with full control..If you wear straight cut pockets..ie slacks you should have an in the pocket rocket holster ..no matter what type of edged tool you carry..
OK as an MBC tool its superb..it does the whole force continuum...noon lethal to less than lethal to lethal if need be..
If you use it as an SDR or MBC tool or think you're going to do KinOps..get a DRONE..
Don't practice with a live blade..
thanks..
Be safe
Bram

Well its eaten my response twice now..
I'll be brief this time and see..
Let's try again..
Yes its a good EDC tool..yes you can use the ramp for scaling fish..novel idea..
fillet etc..get those fish..no slippage with blood guts and fish goo..
You can hammer with it..with the ramp that is..I've done it..
It can be opened and used with gloves on..
RAMP open it like an old straight razor..
you could KinOp it..
Yes we've done Boar & deer ,,dresse them down with it..works very well.
and of course its a great MBC-SDR tool..
be safe
