The Sage line

Post by gull wing »

is a brilliant idea, Sal really did it this time, with a stalwart in the knife industry featured with each new knife. The popularity of the knives is proof enough.

I can't think of a more complete knife than the Sage I. The carbon fiber scales with light texture are just right for grip while still display the beauty of the weave.

When the Sage II came along, I didn't think I needed one, besides I don't like all metal knives. As it turns out the handle shape overcomes the slick nature of metal. I love the thin light handle on this knife.

Now the Sage III is a hickup for me. I really like the textured G10 scales, the blue color is ok  too. The slight change in the blade shape is even better. Overall a beautiful knife. Ok, here it comes.....I can't unlock it without brusing my thumb and index finger.(must apply so much force) Some say they have trouble unlocking as well, some say it operates as smooth an AXIS. I've put mine away.

I am looking forward to the Sage IV, the Al MAR lockback sounds great(bolsters :) ) and am sure I will be able to unlock it. :D

Keep up the work gang.

Either mine has gotten much easier to unlock, or I've just developed a better technique. Still works better if I grip both buttons, but I've discovered that if I want to close it using just one button, pulling back the left one with my left index finger works better than pulling back the right one my left thumb.

Maybe play more video games to exercise those thumbs!

My 3 seems to be getting easier to unlock. Like Deacon said, it might be just because I'm getting used to it. I can barely do it with thumb... I keep hoping it will improve with time.

I am not yet to one-side-only thumb or finger, but mine is definitely getting smoother as well. My only wish on this one would be for lugs that are even less like those pointy circular pyramids that CRK uses. Dry winter weather doesn't make the fingers any tougher and I find the lugs a little on the sharp & pointy side...I only need the blade to be sharp & pointy. ;)

Mine's loosened up significantly as well. i did EDC/play with it for the last week, but just yesterday it got kicked from my pocket, as my Para 2 finally arrived :)

I'm able to open it the same way as Deacon dies except with my right hand. I wonder if the pointed, conical shape is hurting users' fingers and maybe the lock should have been more flat?

Edit: just read jnewell's post :)

Hi Gull Wing,

Thanx for the input. We'll have to wait for a while and see if a mod is necessary in future runs.

Mine is smooth as stated before. I can unlock and close with my thumb only on one side. This one is a real keeper.

As I have said before, mine closes pretty easily with one thumb. That said, I would prefer if it was a ramp style release(like the Gerber versions) rather than a button. It would be more comfortable for repeated use.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

That's too bad. But I understand. I had to put away my Colt Peacemaker because the hammer isn't tall enough and the jimping is too sharp to fan without hurting my hand. Even though the company never claimed I should be able to do it, I still hold them accountable.
So I refuse to use their product that I spent so much money on and boy, that'll teach'em.

My Sage III closes easy after getting used to the new lock and a little break in time. That said, less radius on the end of the release button might make it more comfortable to close. A flatter profile would spread out the pressure.

I love the Sage series. Before discovering Spyderco I collected knives with unique lock designs. The Sage series feeds both habits. :D

Agreed, it feels a little pointy/sharp.

A slight trick when using one hand, put the tip of your thumb+nail at the top portion of the lock/left side [so if its dimensioned like this XX=blade--handle--Dome like ^, then place your thumb on this side of the lock Blade-Handle- lock---->^ . I find that its super easy to disengage with one handle/finger this way, with either hand

Thanks Sal!
Mine seems to have a lot of metal on metal feel to it when I retract, as opposed to (say Axis).
I do hope it works out for the best Sal.

FWIW I sold mine. I found it to be heavier/thicker than I liked and the lock was difficult. I was surprised, given how much I loved the first two.

Rich,

I know the model I handled at the SFO was very smooth, maybe yours just needs to work in a bit more?? Don't put it away just yet!

I love the sage line as well. I think its a fantastic idea and has been executed brilliantly by Spyderco. I love my 1 and 2, and carry them often. I had the 3 for about a week and it just didnt do it for me. The blue color, while I like it on the Delica, was too blue for me. I felt like it drew a lot of attention to the knife. The closed construction on the scales wasn't my favorite either, but I think that is a must with the bolt lock? The lock itself was my biggest negative. It didn't give me a very reassuring "snap" in place and I kept finding myself checking if it was locked (it was locked every time). The operation was difficult as well. I guess it remains to be seen if the stiffness of the lock will wear in.

I ended up selling this, but wouldn't hesitate to buy an updated version and probably dye the G-10 a dark blue.
