Poll 1: model
- Native 5 or UKPK

Poll 2: edge type
- Plain Edge

Poll 3: handle color
- Gray or Green

Poll 4: blade finish and grind
- FFG with DLC. Sounds interesting.

Poll 5: markings and special features
- how about something that says it's the 2011 Forum Edition Sprint?

Poll 6: blade material
- CPM-M4 or maybe some S90V
I just read back my previous post and I noticed it might have come across as being a bit rude. If so, my apologies cause that wasn't my intention.

That said, I have a question for everyone that might know more than I do about the inner workings of the Spyderco company: does anyone know if a 2011 forum knife is even being considered at the moment, and if so, what the requirements would be?

I guess an answer to that question could help this thread tremendously :D

I know this breaks one of Creepo's "rules" because the Manix 2 FRN hasn't come out yet,
but it could possibly show up before June... if so, the CLEAR model would be sweet.

(Excellent post Creepo - should be stickied for Forum Knife discussion)

After all, this is the year of the Manix 2.

That's interesting. How strong is the handle without liners? Is it intended to be used or for display in a collection?

As the 2011 Forum Knife, less than zero. It's not in this year's catalog, no prototype pictures have been posted, and haven't even heard any rumors of a concept model, so you're talking a brand new design that would require R&D. From what both Sal and others have said, the waiting list for that right now is couple years long. Not to mention the question of whether all the negativity that every discussion of a "made in China" model always seems to attract would really kill the forum knife buzz.

Jack, the Clear M2 is just the same as the upcoming production Blue semi-transparent
that should be out this year.

Sure. Currently there is no guarantee there will be one. If Spyderco decides to produce one, there is no indication at this time of which model it will be. And, again assuming there is one, the only certainty is that it will have "2011 Spyderco Forum" markings of some sort on it. Whether there would be anything else to distinguish it from normal production of that model is still unknown.

The bottom line is that, at this point, we're just letting Spyderco know that there is interest in a dedicated Forum Knife for this forum and bouncing around some ideas as to what we'd like. As with most "brainstorming" sessions, some of those ideas are more realistically feasible than others.

Poll 1: Swick 2
Poll 2: PE
Poll 3: Orange canvas micarta
Poll 4: FFG with DLC
Poll 5: Forum Edition 2011
Poll 6: S90V

I suggested the Swick 2 in the other post. It was very inexpensive with S30V. I don't know how much S90V would bump the price up. If it's too much then S30V is a great choice. The Swick gives us an in-expensive knife that can be shipped to NY and probably to more places around the world with a blade length of 2 3/8". I think micarta is a good choice as it's probably the easiest to work with therefore keeping the cost down. Maybe a kydex sheath would be included as well. I know I like to make my own sheaths and some people prefer leather or their own style so not sure if an included sheath would be a good idea. Having a DLC on it would differentiate it from the original Swick 2.

My thought all along for the forum knife has been a Native with Gray handles, a FFG PE blade that is DLC. Blade steel can be whatever works for the Spyder Crew and have forum signification on it. It would be super awesome if it was the 5th generation though. Anyway it goes I am open to anything though, the fact that they are willing to do this for the formites is the big picture of the company they are. So for that reason this guy isn't picky.

I have been thinking of the costs of different forum knife candidates, mainly the G10 handled ones. Do note that this is mainly speculation, though based on facts about present and past models, I might still be wrong. :o

First the Manix2, even though the standard M2 is under the 100$ mark, AFAIK, none of the sprint runs have been (apart from the pink). So if we were to pursue a G10 Manix2, the blade steel would have to be 154CM and not upgraded to S30V. I don't know about FFG and skeletonized liners so those might also have to be left out as well. For example the blue M2's MSRP was 60$ more resulting in a 100$+ price tag. :(

Next the up-coming Native V, G10.
By looking at the current Golden made models featuring G10 and S30V, we can see that all feature a price above or pretty much exactly 100$. When evaluating the price on the Native V, it is HIGHLY possible it will be over 100$, expecially the S35VN blade might bring up the cost a bit. It might be 100$ or over, but I find it PERSONALLY unlikely to be under 100$. Add a custom G10 color with etching and the price will go up even more. :(

All this considered, the options that are left would be the FRN Native, FRN UKPK, Mule, Swick or FRCP Manix2.
The MSRP on the FRCP M2 is 10$ less than on the G10 version (info from KC), it's already FFG, no liners so only things that would be changed would be the color and an etching. Those changes would probably add 10$ to the price resulting in the street price of the regular M2. Which is still perfectly acceptable IMO.

Also, when Sal expressed his desire for an affordable model, I personally think that even the 100$ limit is pretty steep. More like around 70$, kinda along the lines of the 2009 Forum Native. :)

I am a new member but longtime spydie collector. I am fond of my military that was I believe the first forum knife. I don't carry it but I do carry my old harpy. How about a forum harpy.

Not sure if the relationship holds for a manufacturer who'd be buying multiple full sheets, but in the sizes and individual would buy G-10 is about twice as expensive as Micarta. 12" X 5" X 1/8" Linen Micarta $11.00 in colors $6.50 in black. G-10 $19.95 in colors $10.95 in black.
