Tasman Salt in H1 - 3 years at sea

#1

Post by trixx »

Thought it might be of interest to post these pics of my H1 Spyderco Tasman Salt, after 3 years of daily use on a sea fishing boat. I keep it open and close at hand in the cabin in case of accidental rope/limb entanglement.

As I said, I am posting the pics out of interest, not because I am in any way dissatisfied with the product. It owes me nothing after 3 years of hard use, and the staining looks pretty superficial.

The rusty marks on it are definitely streaks of rust, but they seem to be mostly superficial. Even in its current superficially stained state it still does the job perfectly well - it cuts rope quickly and efficiently.

It's interesting that most of the rusty staining is symmetrical. The main source seems to be emanating from the pivot region, but there's also an area at the top of the spyderhole and in the middle of the serrated portion of the blade.

The blade itself has a few spots that look like superficial rust, these photos actually show it quite well. However, I must point out that this is totally uncleaned for at least 2 of the last 3 years, and I reckon most of that superficial staining would polish off quite easily.

I'm very pleased with the H1 knives generally, I have 4 of them and they certainly stand up to marine conditions and fairly constant abuse.

Looks like there is still much life in it.

I bet if you give it a good cleaning, it would look like "nearly new" ;-)

Did you sharpen it in the 3 years???

That's the first H1 Salt knife I've seen with rust on it. I would be very interested to see what comes off if you gave it a light cleaning. Nice to see a well used knife.

I agree, I would love to see what it looks like after a good cleaning.

That would be one I would send to Spyderco (ATTN: Sal or Eric) just so they can have a look at it. Not because it didn't do it's job or anything but because I bet they would like to see what rusted where and/or where it started from.

To me this kind of stuff is interesting. :) Thanks for sharing the pics.

Hi Trixx,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx much for the update and kind words.

If you can, let the knife dry out completely for about a week. The last knife we saw like that had some kind of sea growth on it that needed salt water to survive. Once the knife dried out, the "rust" flaked off.

Honestly doesn't really look like rust to me. Take Sal's advice and let it dry off, or try cleaning it and see if it'll come off.

Nice to see it whomped on :)

The rusting/growth looks very superficial. I'm curious if it's material transfer that has rusted due to the lack of pitting.

Still very cool. Glad some of these knives end up at sea rather than in safes!

That's awesome. Definitely keep us posted on how the cleaning turns out. That's a knife that i really wish had screw construction so we could see the insides.

Nice review/story. How much do you use it? The blade portion does not seem to have much wear on it.

Check out the pictures Tony posted of his: http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showpost ... ostcount=5

looks like red algae to me...it is on the handle slabs also.

Nice work...always good to see a knife (that appears to be) doing what it was designed to do (work).
Thanks,

Great review, thanks. I'm glad Sal chimed in. I can't find the link now, but there was a thread on BF and here about a 'rusty' Caspian. It turned out to be oxidation from tiny particles left over from manufacture. Entirely superficial. And from what I understand, Spyderco implemented a rinsing process that fixed that cosmetic problem. I think that was quite a while ago. I think we can all be confident that "rusty" H-1's simply are not.

Anyone know if Spyderco is making their Tasmans and Spyderhawks with screw construction instead of pinned yet?
