I saw a Krein reground Barong for $160. Is that a fair price?

That depends on the value you place on that model with whatever modifications Tom did to that knife. For me, yes, that's a pretty good price especially since Tom is no longer taking regrind requests/business. By the way, I have one done up by Tom that is outstanding!

I think it's worth it. With Tom's modifications it has become one of my favorite Spydercos. Elegant lines IMHO. After taking this photo, I've replaced the clip with a "low rider" making it even more special.

Holy smokes, with that regrind the Barong looks perfect! The lack of edge always turned me off, but now it looks to be a killer knife. Cross between a Caly 3.5 and Sage with some flair of it's own.
Does anyone know why Spyderco put such a short, ugly edge on the Barong and Kukhri in the first place? Does it serve any purpose?

There has been much discussion. Mr Schempp offered some of his own reasoning in other threads. I linked to these discussions here.Handwrecker wrote:Does anyone know why Spyderco put such a short, ugly edge on the Barong and Kukhri in the first place? Does it serve any purpose?

Sounds awesome. Mind sharing pics? Maybe in the Show Your Barong thread.Mako109 wrote:I've replaced the clip with a "low rider" making it even more special.

I jumped on it and thank God it was still there. Of course, I got bit within the first 5 minutes of playing with it. :) The action is very smooth, so you have to be careful when the blade swings shut. I can see why the original had so much tang on the blade.
Thank you for all the help Spydie bros. ,Boats

Congratulations on the recent purchase and "love bite" from the Barong. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed all of my regrinds.

Chapman, Your pics sent me over the cliff. I can't believe how smoothly the blade comes out. The ergonomics are perfect for smaller hands like I have. The quickness of deployment rivals many of my favorite designs.
My biggest concern with the regrind is, this is a very thin edge. It's kind of like a slightly thinner Caly 3 edge. Like most of you, I carry a beater blade, so I'm going to baby it a bit.
My take is that, you all have to give this originally designed knife a chance.
I am looking for an original Barong soon!
