Force of lock on PM2

#1

Post by happyhunter »

I received my PM2 on NewYears eve. Been playing with it since then. The spring force on the lock mechanism is quite high. This causes the detent to really hold the blade shut. So it takes a lot of force to open the blade. It also takes a lot of force to unlock the lock.

My previous EDC of 10 years has been an old Benchmade AFCK with liner lock. This thing has almost no detent which I did not like either. It comes open too easily.

But my PM2 is quite the opposite. I can barely hold the blade hole and flip the handle (I think this is called the Spydie drop). When it comes to holding the handle and marble shooting the blade out, it takes a good push.

The action of the pivot is great. If I hold the lock open the blade easily flips open and closed. The problem is the drag from the heavy spring force of the lock. Is this the way other PM2s are? Is there something wrong with mine?

Thanks,
HH

I know that there is a difference in the first released P2's and the latest. There were some remarks that the blade did not open and close as freely as the original model.

I remember somewhere Sal mentioning that they did some adjustments. I have held a later release that almost falls open and closed. Mine being one of the first CC numbers has a pretty strong, measured release. I am fine with it since I carry tip up.

Have you checked that the pivot isn't too tight?

My first gen Para 2 was like that initially. Open and close it a couple hundred times. It should break in and the lock will be much easier to work.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

The pivot is fine. If I hold the lock the blade flips back and forth with little drag. Really sweet. The lock spring force is the source of the slowness.

Mine is the same as yours(op). The original Para opened much easier but was tipdown only. I may be wrong in my assumption, but with tipup carry possible on the para2, maybe they designed a stronger detent for safety.

Amen... this post may make me pull the trigger on a PM2 - strong detente and hard to unlock are GOOD things.

I have the S90V sprint PM2 and mine is just like yours. The pivot is extremely smooth but the detent is quite strong. I've had mine for a while so I think it should be broken in by now, but the detent is still hard to overcome. The lock itself isn't too hard to disengage though. It's a little tight, but it doesn't bother me. The detent does somewhat bother me, but at least it's very safe in the pocket. I'm not sure if this is the norm, but I'd guess probably not.

It's a zero-sum game. There are some real advantages to a stronger detent. Drop a knife (it happens) and have it pop open - not a great situation.
