If the Tenacious were made in Golden...

Post by wsdavies »

Say the Tenacious was made in Golden with the same fit and finish and a comparable blade steel like Aus 8. I wonder what it would cost vs. the current Chinese made version???

I like the Tenacious. It'd be neat to see a version of it with say blue g-10 and a s30V blade made here and priced accordingly.

I would guess it would cost triple what it currently costs easily.

It's possible it might cost no more, or possibly less (that's not a statement of fact, just a possibility, even if unlikely). Costs are not the only factor that determines where a knife is made. There are only so many people in Golden, and only so much capacity.

But where it is made does affect the cost. I don't think it would cost $80 if it was made here, but certainly more than it does now. Comparing it to US-made knives would give you an excessive figure, though, since the Tenacious is not made with as high quality as the ones from Golden.

The one I have is pretty comparable with knives out of Golden and Seki. Maybe not the $100+ ones, but easily with sub $100 knives.

I was thinking it'd be like $60-$65

If Tenacious is made with S30V and in Golden, it would be on par with Para and Military. and will be priced as that. Would you buy a Resilience/Tenacious/Persistence at $100+ a piece?

Sal has said on a number of occasions that US production costs are about 5X those of the PRC. Material cost would also increase, but to a lesser degree. Shipping cost would be reduced. Overall, in an AUS-8 class steel, price would probably be close to triple what it is now. For that, given your "comparable fit and finish" spec, you'd get nothing but the warm fuzzy feeling of a "Made in USA" tang stamp. Not to mention the next important question: which current Golden models would you ask them to drop, or produce in lower numbers in order to put the Tenacious into the rotation?

I don't know why you would want the Tenacious built in Golden, let alone with better steel. There are plent of other better options already out there!

If it had the F&F of the Military with the same kind of G10 and blade steel, then yes.

I've often hoped that the Ten would be made in Golden with s30v but at the price it's at now it doesn't cost much to get a couple or few and modify them. I would like the get my hands on some orange course textured G-10 to make some nice handles out of, but having a hard time finding it. Regardless, production for the Ten should stay in China. It's also a good introduction for people to purchase a cheap priced knife from an excellent manufacturer. Sucks them in later on to buy other models. That's what happened to me :)
