Has anyone ever "used up" a knife?

#1

Post by Evil D »

My girlfriend told me i sharpen my knife so much i'm gonna use it up....and it dawned on me...just how much use can you expect to get out of a knife?

I know it ultimately depends on how much use...so lets say like me, you use the **** out of it every day to the point that it needs a thorough sharpening everyday...what's the expected life span?

LOL.... My kids tell me the same thing. That is a good question that I have thought about on many occasions. Since it is hard to determine how long they may last, I guess we need to buy two of each Spydie in our collection... always good to have a back-up! :D

Any pics? I've seen some old slip joints that are whittled down to toothpicks. I guess it's all good until i sharpen it up and hit the hole and it breaks in half lol.

This reminds me of spoonrobot's thread about his Atlantic Salt that he used every day for two years. Lots of life left but the constant sharpening has worn the blade down considerably:

ive got a old case 3 blade folder thats getting there. ive had old knives that just got so worn i couldnt get a decent edge anymore. i would use them till they were very dull then sharpen them and i think that back in my younger days i didnt have the skills and tools to get a good edge without taking off alot more metal than i probubly needed too. in any case these days i rotate knives in and out of daily carry and use often. so much so that i doubt ill get that serious amount of wear on any of them even if i stopped buying new ones now. which aint happining.... lol.
i like to keep them all sharp even when not in use, there ready to be used.. my leek which has seen 8 years of sharpening sessions has close to all its original edge with only a slight amount of setback. retired now it was my most used and only edc for years. so basically i am not worried about it in any of my folders. if i use one so much that i end up considering it worn out, ill of had it and used it for such a long time as to be more than ready to retire it in favor of a new knife. and belive me when i say all the blush had long since worn off the leek and i was ready for a new knife even if the leek hadnt been showing its age.

lock is a little loose, could be tightend cleaned and reprofiled and last for years more. no side play and opens as fast as ever/ pic:

I never have. I do think it's kind of funny that we all have probably enough knives to last multiple lifetimes for a few families.

My grandfather has a Victorinox Spartan that he has used about 1/3 of the blade (depth not length).

My problem is dinging the edge or chipping it and having to cut so much metal down to get rid of it. That seems to be the biggest loss of metal for me.

I've worked with some cooks who had sharpened their chef's knives to the point where they looked like fillet knives (because they didn't grind down the bolster when the edge started to recede). They had easily lost 1/4" in blade depth. But they weren't "used up," exactly, although they were probably so thick behind the edge that the cutting had slowed significantly.

Never noticed anything like that myself. Seems like material removal during sharpening is more a function of technique than material.

You should have seen my ZDP189 Stretch. This was after 10 months of use.

Link to review.

I only have a few knives that aren't factory sharp, lol.

This is a combination of me being very timid about abusing my "babies" and also having a small growing collection. I don't follow the "EDC" principle as most see the rotation.

A white-collar employment is good on the blade. Chances are I'll get carpal tunnel prior to needing knife-replacement surgery. :p

ever "use up" a knife?

Post by fast.ed »

I use my knives for their intended purpose(s), so I don't think I will ever "use up" a knife. However, I have developed a bad habit that may cause a blade to wear out, and that is I sharpen my knives too much. Starting today, I am only going to sharpen it when it needs it.

It takes a long long time. Like 30+ years with daily use, and that's for a soft steel like 440A.

Most of the knives that get used up are the oldies...or people who buy a knife, use it up then replace it...all of us spyderholics tend to never use up anything except the $$$ in our bank accounts...

I wish i could say that ive used the same knife for 3 years straight, but its just not true...i tend to have an edc rotation that magically keeps growing somehow. who knew how easy it is to get the bug...good thing i dont have that for sebenzas...i would be in debt!
