Knife registration?

#1

Post by jabba359 »

While I was checking my shipping address on the SFO site in anticipation of the Damascus Mule, I noticed something I haven't seen before. It seems that Spyderco has a place where people can register their knives (or other Spyderco/Byrd items). Seeing as how I haven't seen this mentioned before, I was wondering if this was a brand new feature. Does anybody know what exactly this is and what sort of benefits (either for us or for Spyderco) that registering can offer?

Thanks for the heads-up. I wasn't aware of this feature myself...

A registration card was included with my frn ukpk booklet. There is a discount from Spyderco good for 90 days if you register an item, forget the exact %.

You have to have an "SFO" account at spyderco.com (rather than just being logged on to the forum). When you log on to that, you land on the Your Account page, from which you can access the Product Registration page.

Is there a benefit to registering or is it just to help Spyderco track product usage?

just speculating, but could it be for warranty purposes? Lots of companies require product registration for warranty to be valid

I'm sure they feel it will be of some benefit to them and, for now at least, one benefit to "us" is the 25% discount code you get the first time you register a knife. I'd also guess that, for some, the discount will be an incentive to buy something SFO. On the other hand, I'm not totally comfy with the idea of having too much information of that kind in a database.

They do need to get some of the newer ones in there C83 Sprint and Kiwi SlipIt are not on the list and some items, like the Bushcraft blanks and Mules, are not eligible for the discount.

I could speculate a lot of things regarding registration, but I won't publicly.

The concept has my attention (and concern). Hopefully Sal or someone will shed some light on the topic before any wild speculation starts flying around.
Thanks,

I saw that the other day, and wanted to register two of my new blades, but there are only random letters/symbols (same in each row) under the "Models Purchased" tab. I'm not quite sure what it does, or if i am doing something wrong....

You may just need to scroll further down the dropdown list. Looks like it's still a bit "beta" with a bunch of test entries in at the top of the list.

Ahhhhh,... I didn't get far enough down the drop down. Wonder if this says something about our respective personalities,....

I thought it's the other way, companies cannot legally require you to register in order to receive warranty.

Let me ask a rookie question. If you do want to register, how do you get to the SFO website? I've knocked around the main Spyderco website and can't seem to get there, so I am likely missing something obvious.

Thanks,

SFO is where you're ordering from when you order from the Spyderco website. In order to do so, you have to create an account, but you can create an account without having to order. In fact, as soon as you hit the main page at the Spyderco website, there's a little Search box in the upper right corner of the screen, and right below it are links to where you can sign in or start a new account.

Go to spyderco.com and in the top right there is a search box. Right below it says "Please Sign In or start a new account". You just sign in there (requires a separate sign in from the forums).

edit: Looks like Deacon beat me to the punch. I shouldn't have spent quite so long proofreading!

yup that did the trick. I guess i didn't look far enough. It looks like the discount code (25% off online only) only shows up once. I registered 3 knives and it only showed up once.

Still no word from Spyderco on what this new feature accomplishes. Sal? Kristi? Care to clue us in on this?
