Tough knife?

#1

Post by HellHound »

Hey guys, I just wanted to ask your opinions. I'm looking to buy something from 60 to 100 bucks, something very tough, something with a thick tip that could be used even for reverse spine impact hits,3.5-4 inch long blade ,very strong lock. I know cold steel makes some amazing budget folders, the Recon 1 had something that i didn't like but now thinking about Ontario's Utilitac 2 any other ideas would be appreciated.

Huoh.. Folders aren't meant for reverse spine impacts and will only develop play at best in the long run. If such abuse is likely, what you need is a fixed blade.
Just my 0.02.

You know it's just a campers dream to find this kind of folder, thought I'd give it a shot maybe someone will suggest something remotely like that.

Compression locks are the strongest imo, any option from spyderco will be sufficient.

You want something from Zero Tolerance or Strider or something like that. I guess in your price range possibly a Zero Tolerance second (you can get them on Bladeforums from kershawguy). I'd suggest a fixed blade though, either from Kabar or ESEE.

Well if that is really what you want then as far as abusive use goes, get any of the Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock models, pretty much all of them have been updated to Tri-Ad locks. And there are plenty of others even if you don't like the Recon.
Ak-47, American Lawman, Spartan, Rajah II & III just to name a couple.
And for this point of use they are pretty reasonably priced and should serve you long before/if they break.

What are you spine whacking? :D People are far more gentle subjects than wood and rocks.

The Spyderco/Schempp "TUFF" is in the works now. It's supposed to be something out of the Jurassic period. A real dino-killer. :)

For harder tasks the Manix2 holds up decent and so would the Gayle Bradley. They aren't invincible but few knives are. For the price you get some of the best ergos and steel per dollar in the industry.

I do second the thought of the fixed blade though. I'd find something huge and carbon steel with crappy ergonomics. After all, it's going to be a bludgeoning tool.

HellHound- You might want to look into the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. It has the properties that you are looking for; all of them. I have owned one for three years. It is my rough and tumble tool-box knife. It is also very at home in the woods. I use it whenever I have a task for a knife that I shouldn't use a knife for. It hasn't let me down yet. Pretty sure it's got a 3.5" blade of VG-1 and a very sturdy back-lock. It is a thick stock knife with plenty of handle. I think there are some YT videos on it. Good luck with your search.

You may want to look at SOG's Vulcan or Vulcan Mini. I don't have one but I do have a Tomcat which is a step up from the Vulcan. The reason I didn't say Tomcat first is your price limit. When I was looking for a knife that was what you described in your list of requirements I thought about these two knives. I had been wanting a Vulcan for a while and all of a sudden the knife gods smiled on me and I received a suprise of "extra money" so I got the Tomcat. I was going to get the Vulcan but since I had the suprise money I was able to get the one I really wanted without batting an eye. Man, that felt good.

Since I was able to do that I'd suggest that you wait, save a little extra money and get what you really want. Especially since you are looking for a tough, high performance knife that requires additional expense in all quality parts, design, etc. The Tomcat I have is the BEST built folder I've ever seen. If you want a high performance car they are a lot more expensive than a "normal" car but they should stand up to being pushed hard. Maybe not the best comparison.

It is not an assisted opening knife but I give the thumbstud a little nudge and the blade glides open and into the locked position. Also, there is no play in the blade at all even when it is half open and not locked. It closes with equal ease. Both the Vulcan and Tomcat have VG-10 blades. My Tomcat has a kryton handle which is my favorite and the cheapest of the three Tomcats available. One has a carbon fiber handle but IMO the kryton is a much more desireable material.

The arc-lock seems to be a great lock and it self-adjusts over time so it continues to stay tight over time.

I'll close with this: The Tomcat that I have been praising broke after about 6 weeks in my posession. It didn't break because of hard use. It broke as I opened it and the spring broke or came loose or something. I sent it to SOG and it was repaired very quickly. I'm assuming it was a fluke as I have had no problems with it since. Also, I have more Spyderco knives than SOG and never has a Spyderco given me any problem. Not even a minor problem that I could live with instead of having it fixed. 100% satisfaction to Spyderco on their quality. I've gotten long winded as I tend to do.

Ok guys thanks for the recomendations but I might have found something. Thanks Mental,I didn't see that cold steel had 2010 models, there remake of the recon 1 seems to have a more ergonomic handle and a triad lock, but maybe I'm just getting suckered in by advertising. http://m.youtube.com/watch?desktop_uri= ... Hellhound, I've tried out the 2010 Recon 1. It's definitely an improvement over the old one when it comes to size and weight. The blade length is the same but the all G-10 handle is slimmer and a lot lighter. The clip is also better placed so that a lot less protrudes from the pocket.

The one thing I really don't like about it as a utility knife is that the sort of guard it has keeps the blade too far away from my hand. I like to be able to choke up on the blade, and like to have the cutting edge closer to my hand. I'm sure one can get used to the handle shape, and it does make a lot of sense for SD.

I find the American Lawman to be a better all around utility knife.

They are both decent knives for the money, if you look past all of the car hood stabbing and zombie fighting attitude in Cold Steel's video, the AL is actually a very practical design.
