Finger Knife
Finger Knife
I came upon this cool blade on-line: If Spyderco were to make one, it could be made without a hole! Doesn't need one. No argument about the handle materials either. Coated in black it would be tuff enough.
A finger knife, modeled after the obsidian finger knives used by Native Americans.
The Abel finger knife blade is made of 440C stainless steel heat-treated to a 60RC.
See it Here:

It is made in California, Usa, Earth..and what is the name of our universe anyway?

I am thinking this could be another yet-to-be-developed Spyderco Knife. Why not a wallet sized Finger knife. But not @ $90.00. Abel is known for high end everything. You can spend over $1,400,00 on one of Steve Abel's Fly reels.
How about a new Spydie?
Dialex, can you draw one up-with all the trimmings? Could a steel tooth pick, or tweezers be chambered inside and withdrawn from the end? Etched design on blade maybe?
New Finger knife anyone?

Quote from Abelreels site:
"The blade is securely strapped inside the wallet with Velcro®, ready for instant use in an emergency."
Yep, just remove wallet from pocket, open the wallet, open the strap inside the wallet, and remove the blade - all of that in an instant and under the stress of an emergency situation.
Yeah, Right, You Bettcha!
I'll stick with the Spydie, any Spydie, thank you.

I don't see why you would want a blade w/o a handle.
Seems like you could just carry a pocketknife, right?
What are the benefits of just having a blade? It's thin?
So what if it's thin. Does that make in more convenient? I thought Mr. Glesser and a whole lot of other knife companies out there put a clip on their knives for that reason...
I'll stick to my folders. I don't even have a wallet anyway.

Just buy a SpecOps THE Wallet, I've heard that you could fit a REKAT Sifu in one. I have one on order...can't wait! I think these little lapel type knives and daggers are really cool for a last ditch defense/utility. I've carried a knife of my own design in my wallet before and it works fine with the lanyard sticking out for easy access.

Hold it there Pardner:
Emergency use doesn't necessarily mean self defense! This blade is there in the wallet to use for emergency cutting situations even though you are not carying a "normal" knife.
The finger knife is certainly not a MBC device. Silly to think it so.
Therefore, to have utility, it would not have to be instantly available, like a neck knife. It would just be there in the wallet when you are stuck for something to get a little job done. It would go very well carried in a watch pocket of your jeans.
Furthermore,
I don't think the intent is to replace any of the clipped knives, or ANY other knife for that matter. It is merely a special tool for special situations.
It is shaped to be used in the hand for delicate scraping, cutting, sepearting and scoring tasks.
Come on boys-open your minds a little.
I say let Spyderco make one and sell them without the wallet at a fair price.

103,
You said "Therefore, to have utility, it would not have to be instantly available, like a neck knife."
However, the Web site clearly states that "The blade is securely strapped inside the wallet with Velcro®, ready for instant use in an emergency."
I was just trying to point out all the steps involved in accessing this "ready for instant use" blade. It doesn't sound too instant to me.
If you were not referring to me or my post, please ignore this response. Thank you.
P.S. The Universe is just called the Universe. The definition of the word 'Universe' is simply "all which exists". After Earth you could add Orion Arm, Milky Way Galaxy, Local Group, The Universe.

rvo3vom,
I was indeed replying to you. You made me think from your comment that the ad had implied that the emergency would include bodily harm threat. Then you'd need speed of deployment. It doesn't mean that. It means instantly there to pull out and use when a emergency dawns.Probably deployable in 40 seconds.
That is the only way that particular knife could be used in an emergency-and not a threatening situation at all. Meant, rather, to to be ever available-right there in the wallet. Their choice of the word "instant" ids iffy-I agree. Should they instead used the word "immediate"? That makes more sense.
So rvo3vom, do you think thata finger knife is a useful tool, or not? I wouldn't buy one at that price, but would consider a finger knife at a more practical price. Maybe stashed in a small leather, or B-Nylon pouch and that stuffed in a watch pocket.
Finger knives would be a slam dunk for the Syderco warranty and service dept. HA!
Thanks,
103

Hi 103,
I'm glad we were able to clear that up. I agree that their text could use some editing.
As for the usefullness of a finger knife, I couldn't see myself using one. I would much rather use my Jester or Ladybug [J/L]. The extra 2 1/2" of handle makes for a much better grip. Also, the J/L can be carried in any pocket or on a keyring safely as the blade folds into the handle. The Finger Knife would need an aftermarket sheath for such carry.
It's hard to guesstimate the size of Able's Finger knife - no specs. on the web site - but it looks to be about 2". About the same as the J/L.
I realize that the J/L handle could possibly get in the way for some scraping jobs, but if you really needed something to scrape with, you could just throw a Single Edged razor blade in your wallet (with cardboard wrapper) for those specific situations.
Thanks,
RVO3VOM

Such a knife could have a place, for extremely fine placement of cuts. Oddly enough, the hole would be, in my opinion, essential here.
The hole would give a small catch for a finger or thumb, and allow a little better grasp. I'd still carry a real knife instead, but for the sheeple-conscious, such a thing may work. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Never underestimate the impossible.
