Should I have Krein FFG my Goddard?

#1

Post by rc51kid »

I have a older full sized Wayne Goddard that is a combo edge blade made from ATS-55. It is a everyday used but in pretty good condition. One or two small nicks in the edge but nothing to bad. The plastic handle is a little worn around the clip mount giving the clip a little wiggle. But other than that it is a pretty clean knife for daily use. I doubt it has any real collectors value seeing as it has been used. I tend to use it for daily uses when I need a larger knife. Part of what I like about it is the large size and nice heft of the thick blade. It just feels right. But it is also a bit thick when slicing things like apples. My little Dragonfly makes short work of stuff like that. Any input on how you think it might turnout if I sent it in for a Krein? Any pictures or experiences with other Goddards that have been reground? Let me know what you think about this.

Kinda depends on what you want to end up with. Personally, I like FFG and have done some FFG and reprofiling and love it. Here is a pic of Navigator that used to be hollow grind and had the Navigator 'humpbacked' blade. I had Tom Krein FFG it and take the hump off to make it more of a Dragonfly blade. Works for me!! :D

got the order mixed up

2nd is before

Tom Krein does excellent work and his full flat grind treatment can turn a mediocre slicer into an excellent one. That said, not sure how good a candidate for that treatment any combo edged Spyderco would be, due to the combination of "zero edge ground" serrated section and normally ground plain edge section. Plus, thinning the serrations might make them more damage prone. Can't recall seeing one that's been done, so you might want to ask him unless someone who's had him FFG a combo edge Spyderco chimes in.

I agree with Deacon 100%, included the disclaimer of haven't seen it.

Part dos: I don't know what Mr Krein charges, but it's not free and neither is postage. Surely that cost will go a long ways into a new FFG model of your liking.
