End of Next Forum Knife polls

#1

Post by Sequimite »

I think the forum knife polls have died a natural death and so won't be pursuing them further. What we learned:

The UKPK and Manix2 both have strong support and are strongly preferred over other models as potential forum knife platforms.

Plain edge preferred by a huge margin.

Leaf blade preferred for UKPK.

If some one wants to pick up the color choices to make a poll for new FRN colors, please go ahead. There were some very nice nominations. I'd like to see more.

Thanks to everyone who participated.
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

All of these colors would be for the FRN UKPK as it was explained that custom G-10 is very expensive. That's my understanding at least. Please feel free to correct me

Note: For simplicity, all pictures were removed. To compensate for that, I've picked the color that matched the pictures to the best of my ability. People that mentioned more than one color in there post were counted more than once. Colors that were similar were grouped together. Names were left out.

Quick Summary:
High-vis Green:8
White: 2
Purple: 1
Midnight Blue: 5
Oriental Blue: 1
Orange: 6
Red: 1
Golden Yellow: 2
Neon Yellow: 1
Black: 1

Thanks to Sequimite for arranging all of these threads. Let's hope our forum knife comes to fruition.

High-vis Green

Votes: 8
Opinions:
Regarding the FRN UKPK, since any single color can be used, we need nominations for particular colors. When making a nomination a picture must be included of the color in question. For example, if I were to nominate hi viz green
I loved the purple FRN on last year's Native and would love to see purple or lime green G-10 this year
I like that hi viz green for the FRN UKPK, or maybe even a midnight blue...yum
I like the high-vis green idea
Kiwi Green
Hi-vis green is very close to toxic green which would be treading on USN forum knife territory. I would prefer something else, perhaps a more muted grass green. I do like the yellow orange above. Navy blue would be great too.
I would go for the bold colours as well. Hi vis green would be great (the colour of my bicycle) as would the yellow/orange.
I'll second this one.
(referring to kiwi green but I felt these two colors were too close together)

For the FRN UKPK my choice would be white like the Endura
white would look good too.

IMO I do not think Spyderco should make a 2010 forum knife. They made a wicked one for EDCf recently and in the future I think it would be best to have one forum knife a year.

Although I agree with you somewhat, the EDC Forum knife will not be available until Feb of 2011... Does that make it next years forum knife?

IIRC a while back Sal actually suggested that we start a discussion on the next forum knife and that's what Sequimite has been doing the whole time. So yes, there will be a next forum knife as long as a consensus is reached. Then it'll only be a matter of when.

By that logic, there should not have been one last year either, given the USN Endura.

Am beginning to think we may not see one this year and, while the sheer number of dealer/distributor/forum special runs Spyderco is committed to may be a factor, I don't think the fact they're making one for another forum would, in and of itself, be relevant.

My personal opinion - I disagree! This is the Spyderco Forum - if there is going to be any Forum Knife I feel it should be for this one first. Just because a number of forums have also chosen to have Forum Knives produced by Spyderco (and Spyderco has decided to take advantage of these additional sales opportunities) shouldn't mean that the members of the Spyderco Forum should be reduced to a Forum Knife only every 3 or 4 or 5 :( years.

If there can only be one Forum Knife by Spyderco each year as you suggest, I feel it should be for the Spyderco Forum. If Spyderco can profitably make and sell knives specially produced for other forum also, great - but not at the expense of the members of the Spyderco Forum

In ideal world I would agree with you 100% and certainly this is my wishful thinking as well. IMHO members of this forum are biggest fans and Spydernuts of the world. So in ideal world may be it is not a bad idea to give them some encouragement.
In real world, where we live, forum knives looks a little different. Spyderco has put extra time to develop and make forum knives at no additional cost: most people want forum knife at lowest possible price. Than will be complains, like last year on how sale was handled or something else.

My logic for there not being one is the fact that Sal stated that they lose money on forum knives. One forum knife per year allows the least amount of damage to their source of funds.

Here are some mockups I did for fun. If we don't get a forum knife this year, at least we'll have some nice pictures of what they could have looked like! I assumed that IF Spyderco was going to give us a 2010 forum UKPK, they would give us the budget GIN-1 versions, so I used that as the model. If anyone wants to tinker with the colors, feel free to download the PSD here:

Note: Votes were cast before mockups were posted. I'm personally loving the purple after making these mockups.

I like em all -- I just hope the blade engraving will be rather subdued - the big spyderweb patterns etc turn me off :)

I really appreciate that Sal "eats" feedback, AND Sequimite I really appreciate everything you've done with the polls, many thanks AND ICSK the handle mockups are great (although personally I don't really get the whole handle color thing I know a lot of folks do) AND I love my G10/S30V leaf blade UKPK AND I love FRN handles. Having said all that: like a kid at Christmas, I want any forum knives to arrive out of the blue, at irregular intervals with no warning, and to be a total surprise not only in timing but in what they are.

Trying to recapture my long-lost youth, I guess.
