Tenacious screws
Tenacious screws
Just bought me two Spyderco Tenacious and I started to love them even though they have the PRC mark on the blade. :D
Justed wanted to know if my measurements are right.
The Tenacious has metric hex screws and not torx screws. The pivot screw is a 2mm metric hex screw and the screws for the clip and scales are 1.5mm metric hex screws? Is that correct?

Okay I just read a thread on another forum and they say the clip and scale screws are torx 6 and the pivot screw is torx 8. I just tried the torx drivers and they fit better than the allen keys but the screws look like hex and not torx... I'm confused... :o
EDIT: Tried to unscrew the clip on my second Tenacious with torx 6 and it doesn't work. The screw holes are too big but on my other Tenacious the torx 6 driver works just fine. Now I'm even more confused... :o

The Tenacious has been faulted for inconsistent hardware in the past.

My two Tenacious knives have definitely not Torx screws, all screws are Hex screws.
On my first Tenacious 1.5mm Hex driver works for the handle and clips screws best and 2mm Hex driver for the pivot screw.
On my second Tenacious the 1.5mm Hex driver works best for the handle scews, the 1,6mm Hex driver for the three clip screws and 2mm Hex driver for the pivot screw.
All problems solved, now I can disassemble and assemble my Tenacious knives when I need to. :D

I wonder if Spyderco sells screws for the tenacious and the persistence. Or is there anybody who does?

Where can I find a 1.6mm hex driver. I don't even see one on Google, the world must be ending. Praying 1.5mm is gonna work in the clip as a T6 ain't doing nothing.
My Tenacious appears to be completely Hex and some people on other knife forums act like its an urban legend, making blanket statements like spyderco exclusively uses torx screws. So I took a pic for em in one tenacious thread tonight.

Do those look like torx to anyone here? I'm sort of expecting that to be the response if any on the other forum.

Not even sure a 1.6 mm allen driver exists, since Wiha doesn't make one and they have a pretty extensive line of metric tools, including hex drivers smaller than 1.5 mm. No guarantee it will work, but you could try a 1/16" allen key.

Yea I was thinking 1/16th might of been what was meant in the earlier posts... Just the same I dug out an old craftsman pack of allen wrenches in the bottom of a toolbox I havent opened in years and low and behold I have a 1.5mm (things the size of a toothpick) and got my clip situated where I wanted it. All is well in the world again. :P

Glad you got it moved successfully. 1.5mm is pretty small, but I have a couple allen keys that are thinner than a regular size paperclip from back when I was into RC modeling.GTP2K1 wrote:Yea I was thinking 1/16th might of been what was meant in the earlier posts... Sounds like a hobby with a lot of magnifying glasses.
Edit: While its on my mind, is there any reason why it was set for tip down carry to begin with? I have I think 5 spydies if you count the Byrd and they've all come the same (right pocket tip up) till the tenacious, I even went to the main page (Spyderco Store) to look closer at the pics and make sure I didn't get a fluke, sure enough it shows it in that position.
Does it simply vary by knife or mean anything? Seems the devils always in the details so I'm wondering if I'm missing some Spyderco lore somewhere :P

Most RC fasteners were a bit bigger. Structure modeling for an N Scale model railroad was what gave my magnifier a real workout.GTP2K1 wrote:Sounds like a hobby with a lot of magnifying glasses.

Generally speaking, tip down is considered the safer carry method for knives with locks which provide relatively weak blade retention in the closed position. In fact, most Spyderco liner locks have been set up for right hand tip down carry only. It's only very recently that a few models have started offering other mounting styles. Tip down also allows for the "Spydie drop draw" where you grasp the knife by the Spyderhole, remove it quickly from your pocket, and give it a snap of the wrist to open it. I've seen Sal make a Military appear, fully open in his hand, that way with disconcerting speed. :D

I was having the same problem. Read some posts and I was sure that those screws were allen and not torx, I mean you look at them and you can see clearly the hex head. But I couldn't find a fit for it. Tried the 1.5mm, too small, tried the 2mm bit, too big. And no luck finding a size between those. Went to a hardware store and tried a T6 torx bit. Sure enough it fit. Took the clip out and reversed the carry position. No doubt those screws are hex head screws, but the size of the hole is really unusual for an allen bit. That size happens to be the exact same size as the T6 torx, so it works perfectly.
Hope to help someone.

I tried to unscrew my Tenacious clip to convert it to tip up carry and started stripping the hex screws. I didn't strip them too badly yet. But I abandoned the effort before I fully stripped them. I may try laying a rubber band across it and see if that works. But for now I think I'll just live with tip down carry on this knife. I'm slightly disappointed in the quality of the metal in the screws. I had just moved the clip on my Para2 right before attempting the Tenacious, and didn't have any problem at all with the Para2.
