What to get...
What to get...
I need an EDC.
So far I have carried a whole bunch of Kershaws and some spydies.
I have carried a Tenacious, a Persistance and a Manix 2.
For some reason the ones I have carried so far haven't been it for me.
The Manix 2 got dull so quickly etc etc.
I have been thinking about getting a Spyderco with zdp-189.
What do you think I should make my next EDC?

seems like all the knives youve gotten are plain edge, why dont you try a serrated or combo edge Spyderco, the serrations always stay sharp, well not always, depends on what you cutting. i trashed a tasman SE in a day cutting 50 mackrels.Charles wrote:I need an EDC.

everyone here knows i stand behind the Delica in combo or fully serrated, plus the Delica 4 is SO much different than the 3 knives you have.
if you have a small-medium hand buy the Delica
if you have a large hand buy the Endura
next time buy a CE or SE
edit: also keep in mind you have the 2 cheapest china made Spydercos they offer for normal size carry, spend the extra bucks and buy a Seki City Japan Spydero, ALL of SPydercos roots come from that.

STRETCH!! Seriously, the Stretch is my favorite knife I have ever had, bar none. The ergonomics are incredible. The blade steel choices are impeccable (they got ZDP if you want too). Deployment is silky smooth. Lockup is rock solid. Jimping is perfect..perfect finger choil, perfect grind, bladeshape etc. All for +/- $70 (90 for ZDP). Maybe I'm just excited cause it's my latest blade purchase, but I've never declared a knife to be my favorite before I used a Stretch. This, of course, is just my personal opinion based on my limited experience, there surely are other brilliant EDC choices. But if you get a stretch, you won't be disappointed. If you have the money, the Paramilitary 2 looks sick as well and has awesome blade steel. All the steels involved in these knives (VG-10, ZDP, S30v) should (from what I've heard) hold a better edge than 154cm
Edit:I agree if you've never used a main japanese made spydie knife (most are VG-10), you haven't really experienced spyderco. The flat ground Endura and Delica 4's are a fantastic value as well, and their blade steel should perform better than the 154cm of your Manix. plus, assuming it's the hollow ground (black) version of the manix, you might like a flat grind knife better. the Tenacious etc. are great value and have a great handle and strong liner lock, but the blade steel does not compare with stuff like VG-10, s30v, ZDP and even 154cm.
I'd recommend trying VG-10 before ZDP, especially if you're using it for everyday tasks and food prep. Not that ZDP will rust necessarily, but with VG-10 I think it's a more balanced all-around stainless steel and still holds a great edge.

awesome choices. I have very big hands (I'm 6'5"), and the stretch fits like a glove, just locks in. Haven't used the Caly but I hear really good things, you can't go wrong with either. I'd go with the Stretch personally based on blade shape and handle ergos, but I've never used a Caly so I could be biased. I like the wire clip on the Caly 3. I definitely see either a Caly 3 or 3.5 in my future. At that price range, I would check out the paramilitary 2 (they don't have it on YCS yet but its out on other sites) and is in s30v which is a killer blade steel
If chipping is a problem, i would REALLY recommend something in VG-10. It has a reputation of one of the most chip-resistant steels that still holds a great edge. You might have problems with chipping if you do the same tasks with ZDP-189, it is a super hard steel. I think s30v would be better about chipping as well.

Thanks for your help. :)
I think I am going to be a naughty little boy and get two knives...

I'll test them both and sell the one I prefer less at the end of the month. (or something)

i gotta start adding the Stretch to my big hands line up with the Endura, if you have big hands go for the Stretch.
edit: FRN would be my choice
the Caly is like the Delica size so if you have huge hands it might be kinda small towards your needsThe Mentaculous wrote:awesome choices. Welcome to the forum Charles
How did you chip the M2? 154cm is pretty tough stuff.
ZDP is a great edge holding steel, but if you let it get dull it might be a PITA to sharpen depending on your skills. I keep my ZDP blades touched up with the sharpmaker after any kind of demanding use.

Good call on the ZDP FRN blue stretch...that one definitely near the top of my list of spydies to get (I just got the VG-10 Stretch so I may get something else first, either the Manix or native).Charles wrote:Thanks for your help. :)

I'd say unless you're really dead set on getting the combo edge on the endura I would get one of the full flat ground ones myself(you have the choice of blue, green, purple, brown or grey). That's just my preference. You should be forewarned that serrated edges can be really difficult to sharpen properly depending on your skill level and what setup you have. You don't want to smooth out all the points when you sharpen it.
The endura is an awesome knife and one I think any knife addict should own at least once. I do prefer the ergos on the Stretch but that's not to say the endura doesn't feel great in hand. Obviously I think they're both great knives, evidenced by the fact that I own both :D
Stretch or Endura in ZDP.
