That's the way I'm leaning. Why do you suggest them over the others?

Just for clarification, I like the idea (although I've got no experience with them) of the crenelated bezel for extra "bite" if used as a SD tool. If the Quark had a crenelated bezel, even just a bit, I'd be all over it.

A good strong pocket clip is another feature high on my list of features I'd like.

Quick cell phone pic. Sorry to disappoint but this one could only be tactical if I beat up a Barbie doll with it but it's all I got..

In terms of overall quality, out of those three lights; the Quark is a notch above all the others. But you didn't mention that the slight scallops on the PD30 was an important feature for you. In that case, go with the Fenix.

I ordered the Quark 123 (2) with the limited-run neutral-white LED. I'm hoping it'll be less blue than the usual cool-white.

I am currently putting way too much debate into whether I should buy a few Gerber Infinity Ultras, a fenix ld10, a Sharpmaker, an aqua salt, or that fixed orange Bill Moran Spyder.

I know I should buy the sharpmaker, but it just isn't the sexy choice. :D

Of all the things you mentioned I think the sharpmaker is the sexist choice...just think of sliding your steel along those white angular and flat stones ever so slowly....from top to bottom....oh nevermind...you just won't understand till you get one.....LOL :p Doc :D

Big fan of JETBeam lights and Fenix lights. SureFire lights are my top but too bad you can't use 18650 rechargable batteries in them out of the box.

Well Doc, I just bit the bullet and purchased a sharpmaker. I had to, the stress from debate was killing me :D

My next flashlight will be either a zebralight 501 or a quark mini 123 NW.

Decisions, decisions...

I've had my quark 123-2 tactical for a month or so. Nice solid construction. Really like the reversible clip.

Cool. A few questions if you don't mind: When compared to the cool light, would it be better for spotting animals at night, how's the color rendering, and is the 7% app. output drop a bother?

At the 200 (I can't recall the exact output) this thing puts out, the 7%drop is no issue for my uses.

As for the spotting animals, my Search and Rescue "specialty" happened to be mantracking, ie visual detection of ground disturbances caused by human passage. My training and experience suggests that "warmer" lights work better than "cool" for color rendering and detail finding at night. That said, I was dealing with close targets on the ground, not long distances. Other SAR members who were tooling around w/ new cole-blue LED lights found that they could be obscenely bright, but didn't have much "throw" to distant targets. YMMV
On candlepower forums you'll find people talking about "throwers" versus "floods". that probably has more to do w/ lens and reflector and it's not my forte.

This Quark, I will say, has a nice spill to it while chucking the light out there. I haven't used the "neutral" beam for tracking yet, as I've kinda fallen out of SAR due to school and marriage. I'll have to try it one day, tho.

Oh, and just for reference, the recommended "tracking" light according to the Joel Hardin, founder of Universal Tracking Services and now Joel Hardin Professional Tracking Services is (or was, when I was active) a plain ol' yellow rayovac 2-d flashlight commonly found at WalMart. The bulb casts a very gentle, diffuse yellow light that kept our eyes from burning out.

Hmmm... The cool blue does affect my eyes, even after a few minutes of use. I don't like the rayovacs much because they're too large for EDC and seem to eat batteries like popcorn. With that advice, I think I'll have to take a look at the warm white limited quarks.

gracias!
