The Caly3 is probably my all time favorite Spyderco also. I bought two from my local knife shop when I found out they had been discontinued. One is my daily EDC and the other is still NIB and packed away safely.

Some pics for ya:

NM, thanks for the pics---absolutely beautiful! As I (think I) said, the sheer good looks of the Caly 3 were one of the biggest hooks for me. Your photos show exactly what I was talking about.

Bien hecho!

I really wanted the CF ZDP version when I first looked at the Caly 3. However, Jeff at the Cutlery Shoppe convinced me to buy the G-10 version as he knew they were being discontinued.

Great advice from an excellent Spydie dealer.

Thanks and you're welcome! I think it is a great looking knife too. It's funny, I didn't really like them when I first saw them, especially the fish-scaled design of the older FRN version. When I held one in hand it was love at first touch though, it fits my hand perfectly. The Sages are similar but I've never been a big fan of liner locks.

Here are some more pics if you're interested.

This is the most recent pic I've taken since getting the new Jerry Hossom Forester last week. Sorry, it's also got some other knives (RAT/ESEE, Blind Horse Knives and Fallkniven F1) in it since I took this for size-comparison purposes of all of my fixed-blades as well as other Spydies.

Great pic NaturalMystic, I appreciate seeing comparison photos. Can you tell me where you picked up the clips you have on your bug and grasshopper?

I definitely want one ... but what has made be reluctant is the pinned construction - I prefer to be able to take a folder apart to clean it etc. Also, to ship to the UK it is best to disassemble it before shipping and that would be harder if only the pivot pin can be removed. :( Replace them with proper screws, like most other Spydercos, and I wouldn't hold back. :)
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

Thanks man, I see you're a fellow T-Dot resident. These Stainless Steel clips are made by McGizmo. I got my first set a few years ago from Berkeley Point I think, but TAD Gear and LightHound sells them now also. My second set was purchased from Lighthound. I normally buy 5 or 10 each of the Nano and Micro sizes at a time but they are about $3 each depending on which size.

http://www.lighthound.com/search.asp?ke ... &search=GO

That's the Nano sized (20mm long) on the Grasshopper, Honeybee and Bug.

On my last order I also got 2 of the TEC Accessories P-7 SS pocket clips shown on that link I provided above but lost one of them last weekend. I'll probably have to order a couple more of those.

my favorite size is the 20mm, use them on my lanyards. I bought some of the 15mm size last time and they just seem cheap. The spring clip on them is to thin, don't waste your money on them.

Yeah I forgot to mention that about the smaller clips and their weaker springs. I actually had a spring on a Nano fail on me recently but that was only one in about 15 or twenty that I use. The Micro is probably the best for the size, I find anything bigger than the Micro is too big for my uses.

I like my Caly 3 even more once I installed a P'Kal clip.
I am in the minority here, but I prefer the higher pocket carry.

Yeah the low rider clip is one of the things I really like about the Caly3. Variety is the spice of life though right?

BTW, which local knife shop were you referring to? If I don't buy online I usually get my knives from Sean and Rodney at S&R Knives in Woodbine Mall. Good guys over there, been buying from them since the (late?) 90s when they also had a stall at Dr Flea's Flea Market on Hwy 27 just south of Woodbine.

The very same place. I think I scooped the last one. I don't usually buy on line either. I like to see and hold the knife I am looking at purchasing. There are times that I really wanted something (due to advance buzz, or the way it looked in pics) and took a pass once holding it, and other times that I didn't think I was interested until I saw it in person.
Great prices at S & R and good guys.

It's the one knife that I wish I didn't mod. I tried to get another one but no luck. Here's a pic. I don't like the extreme point on it. I could fix it, but it'd be shorter.

I like my CF one, but the G10 is nicer, so yes, I am a fan of it and am upset it was discontinued. How about a titanium locking UKPK without liners? I'd love that.

- best wishes, Jazz.

Huh, I've been away from the forum for a bit and just realized that the Caly3 was disco'd when I read this thread. It actually makes me a little sad. I consider it to be the best general-purpose EDC knife that I have ever handled.

You won't regret purchasing one!

I'm with the Deacon - why did they disco the PE Caly3 in G10, but keep the CF/ZDP version? I wonder if it has something to do with the Caly3.5 coming out. Maybe they figured a half inch difference wasn't enough of a market niche. Or maybe the Caly3.5 feels so much better in the hand that they just assumed everyone would want that instead - at least that's what I'm hoping.

Unless there's a manufacturing issue, like the Cat and Chicago, or a supply issue like the Ti ATR, Spyderco only ever drops a model due to lack of sales. The most logical answer I can come up with is that between the less expensive FFG G-10 Delica and the UKPK, there was just too much competition in the 3" G-10 handled market.

It'd be interesting to know what the actual reason is. I way prefer the Caly3 to the Delica now. I've got three Delicas and don't really use any of them. My first Spydie was the full Spyder-Edge D1 then I got the Salt1 then D4. I EDC'd the D4 for a few days then packed it back in my knife storage bin. I way prefer the low-rider clip and overall feel and look of the Caly3. If I need a beater knife of that size I use my 154CM BM Mini Grip.
It's weird, as much as I like collecting knives I have a hard time using them all. The logical side of my brain tells me "why do I need so many users when one or two will do. Keep the rest all nice and new for future use."

I would add CF Sage to the mix of Caly3 G10/Vg10 completion. IIRC, the latest price at NGK or KC for caly3 was over $100, making it most expensive knife out of this group. So it looks like there were too many similar knives in Spyderco line-up and two of them were dropped. ZDP is much more dress-up knife and with MSRP drop from $250 to $200 hopefully sale went up.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian
