Caly 3 VG10 G10 Fans?

#1

Post by AJF »

After a long absence, I am reacquainting myself with Spydies. I have stuck my toe in the water with a Persistence and a Delica 4 FFG, but in looking for a classic EDC, I decided the Caly 3 VG10 G10 was the one for me. I like VG10 steel, I like G10 scales, and I love the leaf shaped blade and the overall look of the knife.

OK, let me fess up---I've already overspent my knife budget---so I am looking, shamelessly, for some solid affirmation that I did the right thing in recently acquiring, in the secondary market, a Caly 3 VG10 G10. I hope to have it in hand next week, and I'm really looking forward to it. :)

Thanks,

Andrew

A few months ago I lucked out and found a VG 10 Caly at a local knife shop at a very good price. Assuming that your Caly was in excellent/good condition, you will not be disappointed, and your appreciation for the knife will only grow over time.

Caly 3 is an excellent knife. Was not surprised to see the SE/G-10/VG-10 dropped from the line but was quite surprised that the PE/G-10/VG-10 version lost out to the CF/ZDP-189 one.

Excellent choice. I am very fond of mine, and am eagerly anticipating the Caly 3.5.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

The Caly 3 G-10 is a classic and I am certain it will be one of the most highly coveted Spydies now that its disco'd.

Caly3 VG10/G10

I love my G10/VG10 Caly3 (I own, but never cared for ZDP Caly3). I bought it in the first day, when they became available and carry every weekday since than. Absolutely terrific knife: blade shape, grind, steel, choil, jimpings; low riding wire clip, ergos. IMHO it is excellent EDC. I was heard broken, when Spyderco discontinued Caly3, but I was able to buy backups. I hope to see sprint run one day.
Also cannot wait for Caly3.5 come out.

Just got a Caly3 VG10/G10 from my girlfriend, who thought it was a nice present for my birthday (which is next week :D ). And I totally agree; great present! :p It has been in my pocket since I got it, and it will be part of my EDC rotation, and it _will_ get used, disco'd or not. :)

This gift coincided with me buying a Pacific Salt Black Blade that had been on my radar for some time now. What an awesome knife! This knife should be standard issue for all military personnel, everywhere. It's _that_ good.

Caly3 has probably become my favorite Spydie, Just wish I could find a G10 version. As for the Caly3.5 they can't get here fast enough. Super excited about that one.

We are taught that the market determines these decisions -- but I have a hard time believing that this classic blade was dropped for lack of consumer interest.

My fav spydie of all time. I love mine. Do not like and do not have the ZDP one as i do not like ZDP.

I wish i had got a back up. But i decided no more back ups.

My Sage 1 and Caly 3 are my fave edc all time.

On a Funny note. I carry a Native 3 plain edge most of the time cause it was cheep and if i loose or abuse it i wont feel bad.

I cant wait for the Caly 3.5 and the Byrd Meadowlark Flatgrind.

Thanks to all for the posts and the Caly 3 VG10/G10 comments.

I had no business buying another knife this month, but that Caly 3 just spoke to me. I'm pretty sure you guys know what I mean. ;)

Thanks again,

Andrew

I have a friend local who suggested one to me, saying he also felt it was the best EDC knife available from Spyderco. I was let down when i saw they were discontinued but i bought the carbon/zdp version anyways at a knife shop and i couldn't be happier. I'll buy a G10 version if i ever see one local for a good price.

It's a lovely knife, no doubt. Mine is my first Spydie and the one that got me hooked. :)

Is anyone else sort of not happy about the extra half in on the upcoming Caly 3.5? Personally i don't care and would be happy to have that extra half inch, if it were legal where i live. That pretty much puts that knife off limits for me which really really sucks. I'm even so let down about it that i've been toying with the idea of sending it away and having it reground and cut down to a 3 inch blade.

But then you have that extra handle length and a short blade. Personally I think they should just re-release the Caly 3 with some upgrades (not that it needs much). When I look at getting a knife around 3.5 inches, I'm not looking for a knife like a Caly. The Caly 3 is the perfect size in my eyes and for almost all my edc tasks... it is the ideal size.

Suggestions:
-all screw construction
-a more subtle looking pivot screw
-deeper finger choil (like the UKPK, but with jimping)
-release a CPM-S90V version with peel-ply CF scales :p

I am a Caly 3 fan, but my upgrades would be,
modify the UKPN lightweight FRN scales to accept a backlock.
Make the knife in the US , so we could get s30v and other high end US steel.
How about a Gin 1 steel, $50 street price version :) :)

Those are mostly the upgrades I'm referring to, except the 90v... that ZDP is awesome. But frankly I wouldn't mind having one of each ha.

Wonder if you could find your own pivot to pop in there that is flush with the scales...
