Unfortunately, "should" can be descriptive of a prediction of likelihood, as in "you should be able to get there in about an hour," but also carries a normative connotation, as in "you should stop smoking." Hopefully, Sal is using the word in its descriptive mode.

I think you guys are either reading too much into a word, or expecting absolute certainly where none could be reasonably expected to exist, unless the answer was a definite "no". My take is that Sal's been "surprised" often enough by the unpredictability of outsourced manufacturing to know that, unless something is in Golden and at least the first half of the batch has been through QC and has passed with flying colors, certainty simply does not exist.

The problem with proto pics and rumors are whiners.

However, 9/10 whiners agree they still appreciate the pics and insight. :D :p

But we know this to often be par for the course when such questions are asked and answered around here, right? It's usually hope or disappointment that drives the emotion when it comes to the issue of what's new and when can we expect it. Given that, those who want good news will try to mine it out of whatever is available, even if it's only a single word. I've done it. To some degree it's just sincere human optimism. In certain cases it may be unreasonable. Either way, it seems a constant part of the internet forum dynamic.

Most definitely. I know I've been guilty of it myself, more than once. It's just easier to spot, and comment on, when one is on the outside looking in. If the knife in question was one I was anxiously awaiting or one where Sal's initial "bombshell" teaser had raised my hopes of something I found truly exciting, I'd probably be among those doing the data mining. :o :D

well he could have been more ambiguous and simply said "im not sure yet."
and then offered to update us as news becomes available. that would have been more neutral to your thinking.

I believe Deacon is correct. We can read "should" as "barring any unforeseen delays,".

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

My take on it is, the knife is coming, which is awesome news. This is one of the most anticipated knives of the year coming out besides the Para 2 and I'll wait patiently til 2012 if I have to.

I would much rather wait until they know the product is the best it can be before release so I guess I'll just have to buy ones that were lower on my list that release first. Hey, they may be a method to the madness. ;)
