Which Dragonfly?

#1

Post by sticktoitiveness »

Looking to pickup a dragonfly sometime soon and wondering which version to get. I've edc'd a buck 112 for as long as I can remember but I'm trying to cut down on weight. (the buck weighs in at 5.6oz). So, here's the list of questions I have for all you dragonfly guys:

What's your favorite dragonfly?
Is the ss version slippery?
Is the etched ss version any better?
Thoughts on the FRN vs G10?

Any other comments or pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks

My favorite Dfly is the one I dont have - th G10. Stainless is too slippery and not the best size to weight ratio. FRN is light, but molded clip. Just too many knives in front of the G10 since I already have two Dflys.

My next knife will be the G10 D'fly. There is a reason you don't see many people trading or selling them. Light, strong, G10, jimping, FFG & a great clip!

Yeah, I agree, go with G-10. I don't own any Dragonfly models, but I will definitely be getting the G-10 version sometime in the future. The clip on the FRN version is icky, and I'm not that into stainless steel handled knives.

G10 all the way - I really like Foliage Green G10 for use and wear and the wire clip is superb :)

My fave is the G10. Then again it's the only Dragonfly I have. Actually it's my favorite knife, period.

I would stay away from the FRN version because of the molded clip, although a redesign is in the works. I personally don't like steel, but your mileage may vary-if you do, no reason not to get that one!

All of them. You want all of them. ;)

Someone had to say it.

I loved my FRN D'fly more than possibly any knife I've ever owned. SS would be a touch slick, but I'd like to try the etched one (or the tattoo if that engraving helps with grip) and certainly the G10 one (you can try a G10 Robin for much less if you want to just see what it would feel like - an incredible knife).

Definitely the G10 D'Fly. Been carrying that at work loose in pocket for the last month and it's been great. Looking forward to the new FRN version as well.

I definitely prefer the G10 over FRN but Sal is apparently working on an FRN version with the wire clip instead of the integrated FRN clip. I'll likely pick one of those up as my next Dragonfly beater and only use the G10 version for dressier occasions.

For EDC G10 scales or FRN, both great grippy and functional knives.
For show SS Etched, just beautiful.

I vote frn although I don't see how the g-10 version could be a bad choice either.

Here's Sal's actual reply:
sal wrote:Hi Buckthorn,

I think you'd have to have someone like Brad make the changes for you. Our new model is tip up wire clip only. Both left and right are possible, but there is still some sticking out of the pocket.

The final pieces will be one piece FRN, bi-directional texture, left / right tip up wire clip. Full flat grind on VG-10. We'll probably make some colors as out customers request.

When the G10 Dragonfly first came out, I thought there was no way I'd pay $70 for such a small knife, but my feelings have evolved :) .

I like the light weight of the FRN dragonfly, but I REALLY like the feel of the G10 one.

I realized I don't always need to have my biggest blade out, in fact when around sheeple at work, a smaller blade is better unless I'm trying to cut a watermelon or something :) . The G10 model is heavier, but is easier for me to grip when opening, and just feels like a quality knife. Who knows, I may also acquire a Dragonfly Tattoo, that looks so pretty, but stainless steel isn't as comfortable in my hand for cutting.

Of course, yesterday my Michael Walker C22CFPE came in the mail, and that is so light and comfortable, it replaced my G10 dragonfly in my pocket today, although of course it costs about $50 more.

If possible, you should try to hold a G10 one in your hand before purchasing, some people might find the "corner" of the blade above the thumb hole and jimping a bit sharp.

Let me be the first to disagree. Although I really like the FRN Dragonfly, the G-10 version was one of the only two Spydercos that I really disliked (the other is the Leafstorm). It was too heavy for its size, the clip was tight and hard to clip on clothing, and it was very difficult to open - partly size, partly because it didn't open smoothly. I say this and I really like G-10 and wire clips.

Other than the rather lame clip, the FRN version is almost perfect. It's so light, you'll never notice you're carrying it. It opens with the lightest flick, and it's a very useful size while being totally non-threatening. I loved it and the G-10 version was a huge disappointment.

I bet I'll love the FRN/wire clip version, but IMO stay away from the G-10 Dragonfly.

The molded clip on the FRN makes it fill my hand for a more sure feeling grip, plus is the cheapest. It is not even close for me, FRN is the right one.

I have a few FRN models and would like a G10. It is a great knife, but next round I'm going for the jimping and the wire clip. I'm kind of sad I didn't in the first place because the FRN clip is starting to wear out on my FRN spyderedge.

I prefer the G-10 model with jimping over the FRN model without jimping, it simply provides a more secure grip

I never handled a D'Fly, FRN or G10. But here is my thoughts: for smaller knives of this size, color FRN may be better handle material (color because they look better than black :D ). The grippiness of G10 is not as important here because handle design is more of a factor of how secure a small knife is in your hand.

For larger knives, I vastly prefer G10+exposed liners! :D
