Ready to buy

Post by Grizzled Gizzard »

I've been a knife guy for many years, but for one reason or another, I haven't delved into Spyderco much. I'm looking to remedy that.

I've done a lot of studying, and I have an idea of what I think I want, but I don't have any idea about availability, or the better Spyderco dealers, so I would sure appreciate your input.

I like bigger knives, but they must sit low in the pocket. G-10 or Ti for scales, and premo steel are my chief requirements, so I'm hoping for a Millie in ZDP, or a Bradley in M4 for starters. The Manix, Para, Police, or Endura with the same configuration would also be good candidates I think.

I've been looking long enough to have gotten this far, and I'm now ready to get a knife or two.... like yesterday. :D

Thanks a bunch, in advance, for helping me reach the goal!

I have had great success with knifecenter of the internet for spyderco products...when I have sent things back it has been hassle free. I think an orange military would fit the bill nicely.

I don't think the Military model is available in ZDP...

BG-42, D-2, S30V, and S90V and older models with ATS-34 and CPM440V (which I heard is S60V)

and there is a rumor of a Military in M4 -

just my 2cents...

Military is a great knife if you don't mind a large knife for EDC....

As far as dealers go, I would recommend Knife Center and Grand Prairie Knives. Both offer fast shipping and excellent customer service. I would also like to suggest Cutlery Shoppe. I haven't personally dealt with them before, but a lot of regulars here have nothing but praise for Jeff.

Welcome.

Well, the Millie does not carry low, or come in ZDP so it may not be what you're looking for. You may want to look at the Sage 2, as they carry lower and are Ti. The Manix 2 is available in several varieties, but the Sprint runs are fetching ridiculous prices now. The Bradley is well reviewed here and seems like a good buy if you don't mind a hefty knife.

Dealers I have used: New Graham, Knife Center, Cutlery Shoppe, Knife Works.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

The Military is made in Golden, CO, and I've heard they don't let raw zdp, i.e., not as a fully assembled knife, out of Japan, so I don't think you will have any luck there.

When I read your post, I immediately thought, Sage 2. Low carry, Ti and CPM-S30V. It's slightly shorter than the knives you posted but it's just about perfect.

I would recommend Knife Center of the internet and Cutlery shoppe, both are top notch businesses. As far as the starting knife I have to say the Manix 2 is a huge bang for the buck. It has 154CM steel on regular production models though. I own plenty of VG-10 and CPM-S30V and would say that the 154CM preforms very well. My Manix 2 is Spyderedge equipped, I sharpen it (ultrafine rods) once every two weeks or so. I am a mechanic and use my knives pretty hard so I am impressed with that. It also sits pretty low in pocket (see image). The ball bearing lock is bulletproof in my opinion.

I really like everything about the Paramilitary except the tip down carry. It is a pretty beefy knife as well. Excellent knife. So scince they fixed my only beef with it for the "Para 2" I am sure one will be mine "oh yes, it will be mine"... sorry.

If you are a patient person mybe the Superleaf will do somethingfor you. That is if VG-10 is okay in your book.

Here is a link to the Superleaf and Para 2. They are not out quite yet.

Check out Knifecenter.com, knifeworks.com, and for usually the lowest price and great service, cutleryshoppe.com

You might enjoy the ZDP Endura, and ZDP (with FRN or CF handle) stretch 2.
On order: Maxamet Native 5
Current pocket hog: S90V Para2

My favorite dealer is cutleryshoppe.com. Knifecenter has everything and usually is the first to stock new models, but is more expensive.

i always recommend buying an old fashioned classic Spyderco like the Delica or the Endura for starters.

These are 2 knives you can not go wrong with. Once you learn to love them you will venture into the knife you really need for your pocket.

go simple first to love these knives, these classics have been the number one selling Spydercos since around 1991 i think. be sure to get the edge you prefer though!!! i like serrated because its the old classic version of what Spyderco use to be..

good luck

Knifeworks and Lighthound are my main sources, mainly for the fleixible customer service and the option for international shipping. Lighthound has a bit higher prices and smaller selection but the shipping is way cheaper, very good for small orders.
In case they don't have something you want, they can get 1 just for YOU, like when I ordered a Spyderco DoubleStuff sharpening stone.
If you like bigger knives with good steels: Military, Manix2, Bradley, and the upcoming Superleaf, all great choices you can't go wrong with, you can't really go wrong with any Spydie.
Even if you don't like it, there is always someone else out there willing to take it out of your hands for a good price. :D

Just because you're not on the list doesn't mean it's a rumor.

For big run items, I tend to buy from whomever. I'll second a vote for Cutlery Shoppe, especially their specials.

For high ticket items, where I demand good service, I tend to use New Graham.

I don't think large knives in ZDP make sense. It's hellish to sharpen, among other things.

Neither the current Paramilitary nor the Millie sit particularly low in the pocket. Manix2--my favorite larger knife line--sit lower. As an initial foray into the world of Spyderco, I believe Manix2 is the perfect step. 154CM is a great steel too--the two non kitchen knives I use most are both 154 CM, and I've never had cause to be even slightly dissatisfied.

If it doesn't need to sit all the way down, get a Ti Millie--it's really too big for my tastes, but is one **** of a knife. CPM S30v is really, really hard to beat.

The Bradley is a good choice for you as well as a Full Flat Ground (FFG) Endura if you can find one with G10 scales.

There are a lot of great choices to star with. I believe you nailed it, per your requirements, when you said the Bradley.

Among the larger knives the Bradley is one of my favorites. I actually carry it in a knife case on my belt. But it can work well in your pocket. The Bradley is heavy yet very well balanced. Its amazingly well constructed. I love the feel of the carbon fiber weave, it's pretty unique and very elegant looking too. The M4 steel is amazingly sharp and the blade exudes power. But you have to make sure you keep the blade surface oiled because it isn't stainless.

Wow! Thanks a TON guys!! I can't imagine a better reception!

That gives me a great selection to see what I can find.

A list of what it looks like I should be after:

Bradley M4- I think it's a must.

Sage II- I'll see what steels are offered. I have too much S30 though.

ZDP Stretch- Good choice for something in ZDP.

Manix II- Cool knife with the ball lock. Near as I can tell, this might be a knife that would be a great candidate for a sprint run in an exotic steel.

Endura- I think it's a must too. Will depend on the steel being offered.

Para II- Again, one I would like, will wait for something other than S30.

The Millie- I know I have to have one. This is the definitive Spyderco to most knife guys. If I can find one in S90 I will snatch it. I'm sure it can't ride too high, and it may be a good thing since it's pretty long.

Again, I am very happy to finally be here, and I sure do appreciate everyone's help in getting me started. I'm printing off this thread to save, as it means a lot to me.

Thanks again,
GG

GG
Yep. So far it has been released in:
Black G 10 154 CM
Carbon Fiber with S90V
Blue G 10 with S30V
Greenish G 10 with Carpenter Tool Steel's XHP
Pink G 10 154CM

Several additional Manix versions are slated to come out in near future including one in 154 CM with DLC blade.
