Out of those I voted for the Delica IV. Although a Tattoo Dragonfly would also be a good choice. But, I do agree with Doc about starting out with a Ladybug, then eventually moving to something else. Best of luck on the choice.

Just surprised my girlfriend with a pink Manix for her birthday- It is her new favorite knife.
She prefers a large knife to smaller keychain sized knives, so if size is not an issue I would go with the Native...
One other thing to consider is FRN. My girl dislikes the look and feel of FRN, so you might want to find out how your wife feels about it. If she dislikes it there are knives like the dragonfly tattoo, which I recommended as a first knife for a friends wife(which I hear she loves.)
Good luck on your decision!

"Purple Delica - Has liners, I would trade the blade for a saber grind for durability."
I wouldn't do this automatically. My wife likes the thinner grinds. Loved the Delica 1s and 2s, doesn't like the 4 as much. Too thick, doesn't slice as well, and doesn't have the thin "pointy" tip for fine cutting work. Let her try the FFG first, and if she breaks it, then consider the saber grind.

I bought my wife the Pink Native and a Black Ladybug. Why just one?Scottie3000 wrote:Im calling for experience from those of you that have bought knives for your wife/girlfriend. I'm planning on buying my wife her first knife of her own. She is not really a knife person and I suspect she will chew up the blade on occasion. She likes colors and I have narrowed it to 3 (all in PE).
Pink Native- Made in USA, S30V, breast cancer donation.
Purple Delica - Has liners, I would trade the blade for a saber grind for durability.
Salt 1 in yellow - Rustproof.
They are all roughly the same price, so what do you think?

Funny you say that. I got 2 Enduras, and a Delica in a order, and they came out of the box in that order. She called the Delica "a baby knife".Joshua J. wrote:Start her on the Delica, and make sure to carry the Military at the same time. The Delica will soon be a cute little knife in no time.
Then when the Szabo folder comes out move her up to an Endura.

Centofante!!!
Everyone can appreciate it and it has the cute :spyder: inlay. The blade is just nice to look at and it's not huge. Not to mention it's light and fits well in small hands. It was my first knife and it's still my favorite.
I agree with dd61999 though, you should let her pick one out after handling a few.

I don't think there's any need to worry about the durability of the FG Delica blade. That would be my choice. If you're really worried about it, get her a BRG ZDP189 D4.
My wife has 2 Delicas and a Sebenza, all carried and used. When we hike, she carries one of my Paras. I'd say get her a knife that's gonna do what she needs to do with it. The delica is a very good all 'round user. My problem with the Native is the small opening hole and the partial cover-up. Otherwise, that'd by my first suggestion because it seems to carry a little easier.

My wife carries a pink D4 in her purse and green Ladybug on her keychain. She uses and loves both.
But, when I got the Forum Native she immediately tried to hijack that from me (wasn't happening!). She liked the way it felt in hand better than the D4. So just for that reason alone, I voted for the Native (I still have to get my wife one :) )
But in all honesty, I don't think you could go wrong with any of your choices.

I went with the Salt since I know my wife would not be careful enough to dry it off all the time. I can see her putting it away with water in the handle/pivot...

Past experience
I have made recommendations on this topic before to find that I totally missed the target. I have learned my lesson and only recommend that you educate your wife and yourself as to what her taste might be. Get her involved in the decision let her make her choice, and help her refine her choice in an EDC as her first choice may not be right. You might have to buy two knives or even three or more to put the perfect knife in her purse or pocket. Along the way she will probably gain an understanding as to why you are obsessed with knives and be more tolerant of your purchases; and you get to buy more knives.
If it has to be a surprise, pretty, generally overrules function with novice lady knife users. (There I go making a bad gross generalization.) Good Luck...Take Care...Ed

Well, that seems logical. If I have... well enough knives to lose count, I don't see why she cant have two or three. I'm deployed (in the military) right now, so I'll just have one shipped to the house as a surprise. I can help her explore more of the world on knives more when i get back. It looks like the consensus is for the purple Delica, so I'll probably start there. Since I'm putting in an order, it would be a waste of shipping to only order 1 knife, so I guess I'll get something for myself tooEd Schempp wrote:I have made recommendations on this topic before to find that I totally missed the target.
