Father's Day Spydie

#1

Post by RangeR »

Hello everyone. I'm actually not as new here as my post count would suggest, but I recently created this new account. I've been a :spyder: enthusiast since I purchased a rainbow spyderfly years ago, basically as a toy, and discovered that Spyderco knives are actually useful tools. My father payed for that first spydie as well as many of my other ones. I think this Father's Day would be a great time to repay him.

He works in an office environment and I'm looking for a non-threatening, inexpensive, and preferably dressy knife..I think the Cat would have been perfect but it's gone :( . An obvious second choice would be the Sage 1, although I wasn't looking to spend that much.. I know the current lineup pretty well, but I was hoping I could get some opinions on a good first Spyder for my dad?

Dragonfly Tattoo might be worth considering. Cutlery Shoppe has an exceptionally good price on it at the moment.

The centofante 3 looks pretty flashy ,good as a dress knife, or the ffg delicas look like worth a try.

Thanks for the dragonfly suggestion, that one had slipped my mind..I'm considering it now. Although I often carry a blue ffg delica, I'm looking for something a little "classier". I think I'll show him a pic of the tattoo to see his reaction.

Also, I've read a lot of positive comments on the tenacious/persistence. The g10 seems dressier than frn, especially with the polished clip. I suspect it might also be smoother than military g10. Would these knives be suitable for khakis and such?

Persistence is a decently made knife and about the same size as a Delica. Blade has very little tang exposed. Some folks like that as it means more usable blade for the length. Others feel it increase the risk of cutting yourself. Only other thing I'd add is that, IMHO, black G-10 is at the low end of the scale when it comes to non-threatening, office friendly knives.

Have you considered the Cricket? It's small, looks flashy, and doubles as a money clip. Pretty sweet and my Cricket has replaced my regular money clip. If you're looking for an actual utility folder that also looks nice than Sage 1 or 2 pretty much fits the bill perfectly for that.

Dragonfly or centofante 3 would be my choice.

I recently posted a very similar topic, and I wound up on the Cricket. It's small, but it's a little-big knife. It's not very threatening looking, and the SS handle is perfect for engraving.

Id go for G10 Dragonfly. Deep carry clip is better for office.
