Storage for Spydies and flashlights

#1

Post by flash900 »

I've got nearly 20 Spydies, counting duplicates, and nearly a dozen flashlights. This growing collection needs a home.

The folders range in size from Ladybug to GB and Manix.

The lights are single and double cell models, all of which are under 6".

What are your preferred storage options? I need something for both blades and lights. Duplicate blades will be stored in original boxes.

Some of you with large collections probably have custom storage. That's not going to fit my budget.

On the other extreme, I spotted a padded case at county.com. At $20, the price is certainly attractive (unrealistically so for what I need, I know). But it looks more like something Jack Bauer would grab as he's about to rescue the country yet again.

Maybe something in between?

Thanks for your help.

I use a large Spyderpac for my knives. Works great for them. I don't keep my flashlights in it (it's full of knives), but I checked a couple lights to see how they fit. My Quark Mini AA fits in the Spyderpac pouches perfectly. My Quark Mini 123 fits ok, but I'd say anything fatter than that would be a little too thick for the pouches. Hope that info helps.

Is each individual slot in the Spyderpac padded?

Are the slots large enough to hold boxed Spydies?

No to both questions
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

I also use the spyderpac. When I recieve a new knife, I remove it from the box and put the box in a bigger box full of my other boxes. The knife then goes into the spyderpac. The knives I use for EDC are usually just sitting in a cup on the table with car keys. When a knife is removed from edc, I put it back in the pack. I just plan to get more packs when I run out of room. I like to keep it under the coffee table so I can fondle the knives at night while sitting on the couch!

How about a cardboard shipping box for glasses? You could fit a number of Spyderco boxes per glass compartment and you could clip your more often used knives next to their boxes. I would guess you could pick one up at a moving company or Crate N Barrel.

Why? Why would you want to store a boxed knife in a bag that can and does flex? You will only end up shredding up the boxes. The knives are just fine in the large Spyderpac. I have one and there is no issues. I keep all my boxes in a larger box I took from work that copier paper comes in. I currently have around 75 boxes inside.

If you want some tips for knife storage, youtube videos are available from a couple people that outline their systems. Tonydahose has one of the best systems I've seen so far. It's a roll around toolbox (the kind with drawers), he made a really awesome knife storage cabinet out of it.

This is what I use, just a tool chest. I'm not sure what your budget is but this one was around $200 for for both top and bottom chests. I'm sure you could find a cheaper one for around $100.

I put my users in the more shallow, top drawers.

And I put my collectibles in the bottom chest which is deeper and can hold the boxes on their side.

I'm just about to outgrow the two pieces I have now, time for the middle piece! Good luck with your search!

I've been looking at the Grizzly wood tool chests, which are one sale now and are in the $100-150 price range, depending upon the configuration. I need to lock my collection of pocket tools away from my toddler.

Good ideas here. I've been trying to figure out how to store since my little wooden box is getting crowded and my Spydies are a mixed jumble. I was thinking about getting a nice Gerstner tool chest since I like that workmanship, but dont know where I would put it. Im starting to think that I need to just get a SpyderPac or something to keep them in for separate slots and easy carry - why easy carry?? If there is a fire or something, I want to make sure to get all my Spydies out of the house...how pathetic is that? Of course, I would also get my family, valuable papers and photos and stuff out too...

I use the same style cases, Aluminum rifle cases. Fairly inexpensive, padded and lockable, some are two-sided. They work great for anything I am not currently using and slides under the bed so it's out of the way.

Rifle or hand gun cases are your best bet. Or at least some sort of padded container or bag with padded inserts.

I learned the hard way.

I have a large Spyderpak and it is full with all sorts of knives. The bag itself is awesome when folded and nothing falls out.

However........

The other month while going to a USN Meet and Greet, my Spyderpak failed where the strap affixes to the bag. The shoulder strap came away from the seams and the bag fell from my porch , onto the steps, then the driveway.

I was in a hurry and didn't notice until the knife-group photo that some of my knives had been damaged in the fall.

The Spyderpak is great for lighter models say with FRN and smaller G-10 models. Anything bigger like Manix's or heavier, I wouldn't advise it. It just adds too much weight.

The Spydrpak is not padded so my clips have worn in places or have knicks in them. Nothing major but they are there.

I keep my users in the Spyderpak as well as anything lighter.

If the Spyderpak was changed and made with actual padded slips, it would be perfect, that and a different colour inside. It's black, and all those dark coloured knives are hard to see.

I was taken care of by my local retailer and Spyderco for the bag. The damaged Spydies became projects live one of my SS Lavas. I had it bead blasted so now it looks lie Tuffram.

I did however score a Pelican 1400 case the other day. It was free. I may use it for something knife related.

For larger collections, if you have the space, the portable tool chests are the way to go as well.

I got this one last year after debating on the Gerstner chests. It comes up for sale every other month or so, I got mine for $75-$80. It is real wood construction and I was surprised at how nice it was. That said, it is not a Gerstner, but at 1/4 the price, it works nicely.

I store my knives in their boxes/sheaths in two Rubbermaid boxes. One is a Keepsake box where I store my folders and the other is a much larger Rubbermaid Brute which holds the Keepsake box and my fixed blades. I lined the boxes with bubble wrap and soft towels. It's cheap and efficient.

Keep an eye on ebay for a used Gerstner - my brother got a older one, refelted/refinished it -- looks great with enough age to give it some character - I keep all my knives in it.
