Interesting thread. Lots of great suggestions. Delica or Centofante 3 would be great choices.

Welcome!
Yeah, just go for the Delica and don't even worry about it. It is the bread-and-butter knife of the line, and it seems that Spyderco designed it with exactly the sort of preferences you have in mind. Tough tip, screw construction, great ergonomics. It's right in your budget, too.
The full flat grind is probably a better slicer, but the standard flat saber grind is going to be more robust. Your call.

A blue/grey/brown FFG Delica. The Best Start you could ever get into the Spydie world. There's a reason why the Delica/Endura line has been one of the best sellers since 1990.

P.S.: I am waiting for my grey and brown Enduras for next to a month now. I am getting impatient.... I need a fresh Spydie fix!!

Thanks for all the replies so far! You guys are very welcoming. :D Anyone gonna plug the Tasman and Spyderhawk though? I'm pretty curious as to how useful those two models are, especially the Tasman due to it's smaller size. Specifically, what are the limitations of a hawkbill blade? For example, can I effectively slice up an apple with one? Or are they only good at cutting cylindrical objects on the pull stroke?
They are good in what they are meant to do (cutting rope etc), but while I do own a Spyderhawk and a Harpy, I would not recommend it as a first EDC. They are kind of a special breed and they cut like a charm for sure, but for everyday tasks including food prep, I would try to get a different blade style.

Native for my 2c. It's about the same size as the Delica, but ergos work a lot better for me: longer effective handle length with the choil and quite a bit broader. Also, the blade is a little thicker and has a deeper belly. Saber ground, but in my experience slices just fine. In terms of the tip, it is more robust than my old style Delica2. Not sure how it compares to the newer Delica4 tip. It is large enough to be effective, but flat and light enough to ride unclipped in your pocket if you need it to be discrete. I think the Native gets less buzz on the forums in part because there are fewer variations out there to discuss, but it definitely seems to have a loyal following...and it's made in USA.
