Need Help. Possible duplicate CC#

Is one of the knives a fake collector number?

I need some opinions on this. I purchased a Maddox with a collector number of 71 a long time ago. It came with a box but until today I did not realize that the box did not have the collector number on it.
I just saw a collector number 71 Maddox sell on bladeforums. So what gives, I thought there could only be one collector number per variant. The Maddox was only made in one variation.
I have always wondered if anyone would go thru the trouble of creating fake collector knife.

Just a quick picture of my knife with an Iphone. Sorry about the quality.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

The link to the knife on bladeforums is below.

As for the box being numbered I wouldn't be concerned about that. The knife I wouldn't be too concerned with either.Collector's numbers don't add any value unless they're in a large group with the same number together. Also I doubt this particular or the other one is a fake being the Maddox is little known and wasn't very popular, so I don't think it would be worth anyone's time to fake it.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

Strange, but I'd faster believe it to be a mix up with the numbering than one of them being a fake.

You can add another to the list, I've seen a few for sale and with a couple of exceptions they were numbered 071 .

Well, so right now it seems most likely that there was some strange glitch in the laser etching process....

but I am positive your pic shows a genuine Spyderco box and knife. Chances are there is only ONE BOX with the "71" on it, but lots of knives with that number....

never saw something like this before!

Guess I should have checked my Maddox before replying...

Definitely a glitch at Spyderco's end. Just have to hope there was no "Collector 71" at the time. :D

O.K. You made me look. Mine is correctly numbered on both the blade and the box.

That is very interesting that there are so many number 71 out there. I would be interested in a chime in from Kristi or Sal with what happened.
Is the machine that etches the number automated?

I just checked mine, and it has an 071 on the blade also. Maybe we should start a club!

Now I am curious to know why this is!

Holy crap, mine too. So it's genuine right? Because I bought mine from an auction site.

Only someone from Spyderco can confirm it with certainty, but I strongly believe that it was a factory foul-up and all the 071 Maddoxes are genuine. I know I purchased mine from a reputable dealer back when they were still in production. That, and the fact that back then counterfeit Spydercos were nowhere near the problem they've become lately, makes me confident they're ok.

One other oddity I noticed though, my Maddox does not have a country of origin marking on it.
