...BTW, I was looking at one of Mike Snody's videos (a bit wild and ghetto for me, but still interesting with the sound turned off) and noticed a custom Ronin being ground. I touched base with him and he mentioned the idea of doing a limited edition custom run for auction through his web site. I haven't discussed it with Sal and Eric yet, but forumite feedback on the idea would be welcome.

Also, I welcome your feedback on this idea: a byrd Ronin.

...
Not huge on the custom from Snody personally. I would rather track down a NIB Spyderco version on the second hand market but that's just me personally. Same goes for his current custom Yojimbo...super cool knife but I'd rather save money and get a :spyder: one. That said, I'm sure his AFI's would go ga-ga over it.

Now...the BYRD RONIN?!? Um...please x 1 million. :D

I have been looking for a Ronin for a while too just seems I'm never quick enough...

Now as for a Byrd Ronin....

YES PLEASE!

I too would ask a sheath come with it, as I really want a good necker knife.... This would be ideal!!!!!

Kuolema, congrats on it arriving! :D would you mind posting some comparison pics for size? Just so I can get a better idea of it :)

Sure thing, I'll see if I can wrangle up some Standard Spydies and snap a few shots.

Just remember I suck at photography and my pics will make your eyes bleed :D

Just a little pre-warning:

The Ronin when in sheath does seem BIG, and at first I thought it'd be futile wearing it as a necker as it'd stick out of my shirt, but despite it's size it dissapears when worn around the neck and after awhile I find I don't even notice I'm wearing it.

Okay, here ya go Stang, and I realized I forgot to take the Para outta my pocket and add it to the picture  If you really wanna see it with a Para, I'll do it. I'm sorry for the lack of Selection, my collection is slowly being rebuilt so this is all I could muster, to compensate I added in some of my other goodies: a LW Wave and the CRKT Necker that started it all (and as always please excuse my pathetic attempt at Photography! :o ):

Here is D4, Tenacious, E4, C83 Persian, LM Wave, Ronin, CRKT Folts Minimalist.

Same with blades open.

Ronin and a Delica 4.

Hope that helps, again, sorry for the crumby pictures! Oh, also I temporarily removed the Teklok from the Ronin Sheath, so that's why it's missing in the picture.

The ronin is a great knife just i don't think the public knew what it was when it came out. If you notice you don't see them up for sale often. I was lucky enough to get one from France and it's a GREAT knife. I agree though it would make a great byrd knife. You don't need a super edge retentive steel for an SD knife. If used as designed anyway. It would also make it an affordable SD Fixed blade and you know it would be a qaulity piece and know what steel is being used. I would buy a few if they made it into production. I think it would be a huge step for spyderco to bridge the gap by making it a byrd product.

Kuolema I can see them! :D Thanks for taking all of those that really helps give me an idea. I would love to snag one of these for a necker :) I thought the same thing about the square ish looking sheath being visible when worn but I'm glad you addressed that as well!

Again congratulations and thanks for the pics :D

Yeah, It was sticking out bigtime, then I took off the Teklok and it literally disappeared... Unless you're wearing a tight shirt, then nothing is gonna stop it from showing. When wearing it as a necker it's perfectly designed, the necklace covered in paracord to stop rattling/etc, but stops just at the connection incase someone tries to strangle you with it, it'll snap. And the way it's thread through the sheath there's no way it can flip on your and screw up your draw.

I do, however, have one question for Ronin experts... I'm thinking of how best to carry this knife on the belt. The little card that comes with it shows the different carry options... Which one is best for the Ronin? I was thinking small of back, but I'd like some input on this!

I dont post on here much but i had to comment one this one. I love my ronin. Mine is a later version with the belt sheath. I carry it on the inside of my belt with a g-clip. always tight on my side. a cheaper version like a byrd would be awesome. something i could really beat on and not feel bad about. then again any kind of new release of the ronin would be great. a custom snody run would be good if the price isnt outrageous. i hope you enjoy your ronin as much as i enjoy mine. congrats

Best to put some paracord thru the holes of the sheath and wear it anywhere on the belt..middle of the back would be my last choice as it is too close to the spine and If someone were to throw you up against a hard object like a wall...that could hurt big time...I wear mine crossdraw on my left hip and sometime behind the right hip.....Doc :D

Congrats on the new Ronin!

And count me in for a Byrd Ronin (or any Ronin, for that matter)!

Congrats on the new Ronin, Kuolema! I hope it serves you well.

As for belt carry, my favorite is the "static cord" carry that I first saw on Blade Rigger knives back in the early 1990's. With the knife set up as a necker, loop the chain around your belt and pass the knife and sheath through to make a simple "cow hitch" knot. Then place the sheath inside your waistband. For me, the 4 o'clock position, just behind the right hip, works well.

When you draw, draw sheath and knife together. When you hit the end of the chain, the sheath pops off. That allows you to draw in any direction. The super-sharp blade also does not clear the sheath until it's well away from your body. This carry is also great in a vehicle. When you get in, just pull the knife and sheath out and lay it on the seat nex to you. You won't forget it when you get out because it's attached.

Thanks for the feedback on the concept of a byrd Ronin. There has been no official action on this--I just thought I'd test the waters on the idea.

Stay safe,

Mike

Thanks Mr. Janich! That carry method has so far today help up great.

As for the Byrd Ronin... I suppose you could try a sort-of Mini-Ronin if the price is too expensive for a Byrd Ronin based on the Original Spydie Ronin.

Just an idea.

Congratulations on your Ronin find/purchase!

I wore Ronins on my belt after seeing SouthNarc demo his Disciple and Clinch Pick prototypes at the Blade Show. One, Clinch-Pick style in front, to one side of the belt buckle, and one upright, just forward of the hip. After I had my own CP and Disciples, I mosly stopped wearing the Ronins on the belt, but I still wear one as a necker, if my clothing combo is right for a necker. (For OPSEC reasons, I won't be specific; my name is rather unique, and Google is my enemy.) IMHO, the Ronin is one of those perfect knives.

I probably have half a dozen Ronins, one of them a Snody handmade. I miss some of the discontinued Spydies! I am fortunate to have stocked up on Ronins and Guntings, knowing they would not be in production long-term.
