Sal: Caly 3.5 question

#1

Post by 224477 »

Sal,

I have a Caly 3.5 related one, that blade definitely got my attention, I wanted to ask if you plan a screw construction, or pinned body, as shown on the proto in A`dam. I think the pivot and lockbar were screws only on the proto.

Personaly, I would be happier with all screws instead of pins.

And ZDP189 with carbon fiber :D . I know you listened by Caly 3, just that one was too small for me. I still live in a part of world where I can EDC a 4" blade.

Thanks for the feedback on the screws vs. pins :)

Ill second the request for a CF version. If you could get the same feel and performance out of the longer blade, it might become my only EDC...

+1 for CF. Textured like the CF Stretch or CF Military. This is the Spyderco I've been waiting for...

Wouldn't a Stretch ZDP be exactly what you need then?

-1 on CF
but very interesting on VG10/G10 (or micarta, wood, bone).
and ASAP, please. :)
call me crazy, but I already have it on pre-order.
Sal, thank you very much for bringing Caly back. With 3.5" blade it will be magnificent knife.

Don't care either way screws or pins. Do not plan on opening it up so it does not affect me. But thanks Sal for giving us back the Caly!

Maybe I'm crazy but I'd prefer pins. One of the reasons I like caly is the slender appearance, and to change to screws the handle would have to be widened like Sal said.

I'm with ya here, I'd be all over a Micarta version. Micarta seems to have much more timeless appeal for me. All these "flashy" CF scales no longer hold any interest for me at all, I've got a bit tired of them actually. Although I do like the rough Peel ply CF from a practical point of view on work knives, but it's really not worth the added cost IMO.

I really really really love the look of the burgundy Micarta on the Shabira proto.

I'd prefer screws, simply because it makes replacing the G-10 scales with something decent looking a lot more feasible. But, if my take on Eric's comments in the video Mr. Blonde posted is correct, then it will probably have to be pins for the same reason the Caly 3 uses them - to keep the knife as compact as possible.

What keeps my off from the Stretch II is the drop point blade actually, but I will admit I have been eyeing it a couple of times already. :D

Thanks for the heads up Paul, I must have been wrong looking, I was living in the fact that Caly 3 is a full screw one. :o

If the Dragonfly has an all screw construction, why wouldn't it be possible for the Caly?

-1 on CF as well. Screws/pins... I don't really care, especially on a dress knife like this.

I like to customize as much as the next guy, but the critical task from where I sit is maintaining the ergonomics of the last CF version. CF itself isn't my favourite handle material, but Sal found some brilliant CF for the Caly. Screws are preferred to pins, but the CalyCF I've never had a desire to modify and I'm not sure the F&F could be improved. ZDP isn't my favourite steel, but it works perfectly for a blade of this style. The back lock is actually a design that I typically avoid, but the Caly3CF does it so well that it makes my favourite liner locks feel cheap.

I need to replace my old Caly3CF, and if I could do so with a slightly longer blade I would be a very happy guy. I doubt it will happen, given the way manufacturing has shifted away from Seki and the fact that the CF most likely came from a limited supply, but Sal has made dreams come true before...

(Yes, I've lookedat the Stretch, it's a great knife but not what I'm after.)

Interesting variety of opinions here. The slippery CF is the only thing I don't much care for on the Caly 3. I like the textured CF on the Sage, or plain old G10 is also fine with me. If the knife is going to have a slick handle I'd prefer Micarta.

Funny, I think the CF on caly 3 isn't shiny enough, would prefer the type used earlier (CF police/delica?). Given the purpose of the knife traction isn't top priority, especially with the handle shape providing grip.

Sometimes the middle ground is the ideal, sometimes it's not. If I were grading Spyderco CF for desirability, I'd put the matte version used on the Caly 3 and Native IV CF dead last. It is neither particularly attractive, nor does it offer noticeably more traction than the shiny stuff. The shiny stuff is the most striking, visually, but tied for last in the traction department with the matte. The stuff on the Sage is, IMHO, a close second in looks and offers significantly better traction. Peel-ply would be last for looks, but top of the pile for traction.

As has been noted, and as with most things, opinions on this are going to vary widely. Probably one of the reasons Spyderco offers a number of styles of CF.

We'll probably make the first run with VG-10 and G-10. Then we'll watch you for future directions.

Sal,
Thank you very much for bringing Caly back.
Can you, please give us rough idea when to expect Caly3.5?
I already have one on pre-order. :)
