Chinese Folder rant…sort of

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

I absolutely love the Chinese Folder design by Bob Lum. Closed or open, the lines are simply stunning. What makes it even better, is that’s it’s a very functional design. The curved handle and slightly dropped blade offer great ergos, and the full flat ground leaf blade is a great cutter. Imagine my rollercoaster of emotions last year when I heard that another sprint run was released…..in foliage green.

Image

Yes, I know the almite can get slippery. Yes, I realize there is no jimping on the spine for a better control of the blade. And yes, I also realize the knife has a ‘mere linerlock’. That all doesn’t matter when you know how to cut with a knife, i.e. point the edge towards the object you want to cut and you’ll be fine. This is a knife for connoisseurs, for people who know their way around knives; know how to appreciate them and how to use them.

Image

You can imagine my giddy mood when I read the news of a new sprint run of Chinese folders for a US distributor last year. But by Thor’s hammer, why did they order this great classy design in foliage green?! I even heard a version was made with a foliage green handle and a black blade, but I refuse to believe that! I don’t mind foliage green as a handle color in itself, not at all. On a working knife design, I really like it. I love my foliage green Delica, Military, UKPK and I even learned to accept the foliage green G10 on the Khukuri and Barong. But why try to make the pinnacle of custom folding artistry that is the Bob Lum Chinese Folder, into an uncouth ‘tactical folder’? It’s nonsense!

Image

My inner collector finally beat my sense of good taste and I decided to get one after all. I must say it’s nice to have a ‘minty fresh’ Chinese Folder again to add to my collection. And since I don’t care much for the handle color, this version of Bob Lum’s creation makes a fine user. Next time, make it in a nice burgundy red or purple OK?

Dear Wouter

I have much similar thought on this as you do. As a fan of this design I had to get one to satisfy my curiousity though. I also would like a burgundy or purple. In fact try also burnt orange or a raspberry red ?

The Jade Green or even the Blue original runs were just stunning. This grey/green color? not my cup of tea.

Yes, by Thor's hammer, why did they choose what I fondly call "Soylent" green? I have my theories, but why bother? I would be thrilled to get a deep, rich purple one. Imagine that!

As a fellow connoisseur, thank you for the post.

Don't care for foliage green, generally detest black blades, but oddly, on the Lum, the combination looks pretty good to me and even the foliage green with the uncoated blade looks better than the black almite one. Mandarin orange, chinese red, plum, or gold would be much better.

The Lum Chinese Folder is my first Spyderco knife. I bought it because it's lines are so beautiful. The seamless arc from the top of the handle to the tip just spoke to me somehow :D
Agree with Mr blonde on his lock theory. If I'm bearing down so hard on a knife with a a sharp blade that I risk the lock failing and closing on my fingers I am doing something wrong or need different tool. I'm always aware that sharp knives can hurt you.
I like the foliage green, it doesn't even look green lol. More like a soft grey.

The Lum Chinese is one classy and useful folder.

Hi dbcad,

In my use of the Chinese Folder I would say hat it isn't really something you would want to bear down hard on - not because I feel the lock can't handle it nor the blade, more so that the handles can get a bit slippery if you have sweaty hands or fail to grip it properly....thus resulting in avoidable injuries

If you want a hard use folder just have a look at the G10 or FRN handled offerings from Spyderco. I would class the Chinese Lum as a gents folder :p

I hear you Oz, tho beautiful and really great for civilised settings, the lum has it's shortcomings in hard outdoor use. I have a g-10 Manix, Bradley, Stretch, Pacific Salt, soon to be arriving Temp2, Dayhiker and Forester for backup. The right tool for the right job and or situation.

The Lum is still so very classy :D and it will always have a place.

I am a huge fan of the Chinese Lum and believe it to be the best Spyderco collaboration model ever, yet I agree that the foilage green is not my preference. I had both a black and foilage green Lum but now only have the black

The coated blade though ruins one of the great things of the Lum, the great grind and spine cusp.

Hey pj, I agree on the coating. The vg-10 Lum I own is a nice slicer, but the coated blade on the only pacific salt I have is not. The coating tends to cling to anything soft and moist that your cutting. Also not into the look, but that's just me. Live and learn I guess, they're both great knives, just thinking about a salt without the coating..lol :D

I'd love a Lum in ZDP :)

I am with Paul on this one.

It looks more like a metallic light green than foliage green and I love it.

Personally, I love the foliage green color on the Lum. The original green and blue just seem too garish, compared to the muted almost gray of the FG.

It's also one of the nicest looking production folders I've ever seen. The only one I can think of off the top of my head with even nicer lines is the Case Swayback Jack.

I'm in agreement with Deacon, LorenzoL, & yowzer. I like the look of the latest Lum. Furthermore, If I sold one from my collection, the older green Lum would be the first to go. :D

For me, purple is one of the absolutely least favored color for a knife! I see no need for it. Any pastel, easter, or candy color is a NO GO to me. However, the gold and burnt orange colors sound interesting. I'd have to see "Chinese red" first before consdiering it.

Not a big fan of the Lum Chinese models, but if I were to get one it would be a foliage green one. I really like that combo, in my mind it's taking a classy looking blade and just messing it up enough to make me stand up and take notice.

The Lum is a great looking knife, I just wish that it was made in a g-10 handle. That almite just looks too slippery for my taste.

I really love the lines of the Lum but I use all of my knives and a non-lefty knife has no place in my pocket. If one does come out I'll be the first in line.
