When is a Spydie deal too good to pass up?

#1

Post by iwolf81 »

For me, the limit seems to be $65 and under, including shipping, and is $10-15 less than at other reputable website. Even if I'm only slightly interested in the Spydie, it's tough for me to say no. I've ended up with multiple E4 and Caly3 knives this way, and am about to get a second Assist using the same (il?)logic.

On the other hand, I spend way too much time trying to justify an over $75 Spydie, and sometimes miss out on even better deals, such as an $85 Barong. :(

So, what triggers your addiction? :)

Ira

When it's a knife that I really want and I can find it for $10-$20 below the price at most dealers.

When its likely I won't see it again at my favorite retailer (SFO). Things like D2 and S90V Millis, SS Poliwog, USN and Spyderco forums, stonewashed 52100 mule, black Meerkat, D'Allara, ATR, T-Mag, Old Manix, Salsa...

If there's something I've been looking for, and the price of shipping brings it cheaper than my local shop... I check the bank balance and consider.

If it's a big difference, I jump on it (Just waiting for my frn and g-10 dragonflies, paid the same price my local charges for JUST the frn). Saved myself a little over $100.

The thing to consider is that current production beaters (delica, endura, native, millie) are selling for the same price now as they were 5-6 years ago, if you buy used. I usuallly have 3-4 that I've picked up cheap, that I gift to folks without knives.

I've bought many Spydies because they were $20 or more below ebay pricing in order try a model that was new to me. Often an online retailer will have closeout items below ebay pricing. And I bid low on countless ebay auctions and occasionally get one, like the $43 Aqua Salt which should be on its way to me.

Mostly, though, I go by percentage. When the price is around 1/3 of MSRP, like the Khukuri is now, I usually can't resist buying one.

That was a private sale on jerzeedevil... you just have to keep an eye on the section there and snag deals. of course you can also spend a fortune buying toys you want on there too.

Just like Ira (above), when I see a price in the $65-70 range, it causes me to look twice, even if it's a Spydie I already have. I seem to suffer from "just in case" syndrome. As in "I better buy a backup of 'xxx' knife just in case". In case of what? I have no idea :)

Sounds like an echo in my mind. The 'just in case' scenario is very powerful in me.

I don't really let price trigger my purchasing decisions, rather, I let design and function be the rule. OK, carbon fiber is a major draw too, as is steel type. Aw nuts, who am I kidding? If I like it, I buy it. :o

I should REALLY like the knife, or maybe being able to trade it for something of better value ;)
And of course, my bankaccount should agree with me :D .

If it's a discontinued model which I desire and don't already have, then the price need only be within my pain threshold. Am lucky there's only one knife left in that category and my pain threshold for it is low enough it will probably stay on my want list forever.

Other than that, the only current bargain I've been unable to resist has been CF Kiwis for $60 a pop. :o

When I first saw G10 Enduras going for $66.99 including shipping on eBay I thought it was a mistake but thankfully I pulled the trigger and now I have my favorite Spydie! If I could have gotten the CF Sage when it was in the ~$60 range I would have got one or two...

I picked up a CF Sage for $65 shipped. I was pretty happy with that purchase.

The "shoppe" had their order from Spyderco cancelled because Spyderco is out of stock; so is the shoppe. The $70 poor_fish deal might be the best one left.

I too greatly suffer from the "I need backup syndrome", though I like to call it redundancy. This especially applies to discontinued models. (I have the same disease with my SIGs.)

I pulled the trigger on my second Orange Assist from poor_fish - one for each of my winter coats was my (lame) justification. ;)

Since seeing Ed Schempp in the SHOT video, I've been looking for a mini-Persian and a Barong (I already have two Khukuri's), but I'm having a tough time justifying their $100+ prices, especially since I pre-ordered the Blue Manix and Ti-RIL/M4 Millie.

I'm running out of pockets to 'hide' my Spydies in from my wife... :)

@ Sequimite: Oh no! that's definitely not good news.. I'll just have to keep hoping that the Aussie dollar rises even further this year

@ iwolf: The Stretch is missing from the line-up in your signature =p
