Bulging Lum, anyone else seen this?

#1

Post by ryan28801 »

I have a "mint" Blue Lum (mint except for the bulging) safe queen. It has been sitting in my safe for a few years, and I recently took it out to do a general fondling, and light oiling. I saw that it seems the almite scales have pulled away from each other and the liners. I tried to lightly screw it tight, but it seems that the last few threads have stripped out of the liner. I tried a drop of red loc-tite in each hole, screwed them in and covered with a cloth, then clamped it for 3 days. Upon removal of the clamp the screws just popped out again. They thread in fine initially, doesn't seem to be the screw theads as much as it is the receiving threads.

I called the customer service line and was told if it looked like it had been worked on then the warranty was no good, and if it is determined to be a manufacturing flaw then I could get credit for the original MSRP of about $180. I think I paid nearly twice that when I got it...had to have it ya know...

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has ever had anything like this happen and if they ever found a resolution for it.

I'm not looking to superglue it and scam someone on it, but would like a nice, solid solution for the whole thing.

Help?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Ryan

It seems to me I've heard about this same thing happening on other Lums, but I really didn't pay much attention.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

I'm guessing I could sell parts off it and get more than the $180 I was potentially offered, I haven't ever worked on it!...and I have to pay $20 or so just to send it in....how do you prove how threads get stripped? Arrrgghhhh!

Not being a collector, I'd put different screws in it, but that's just me.

I don't know about that bud. Parts for a blue lum fetching more than a blue lum.
You can always send it to a pimper then keep and enjoy it. :)

Yeah, I though about it, you thinking of re-threading or just shoving them in and crossthreading till it all pulls together? I guess I'd need some digital calipers to figure out what I'd need....would you get those at a popular parts supplier (Jantz, etc?) Never had to up-size screws before. Hate to ruin the collectors value though. Maybe a pimper is the way to go...I just don't know what else there is to be done to it...any pimpers out there have any ideas?

If I'm going to ruin the collectors value maybe I should just put it together with some 2 ton epoxy and call it a day.

I have a blue user that has held up great...just strange for a barely handled one to come apart in the safe.

my sentiments exactly...I've been thinking and my new theory is that there were problems that the previous owner tried to cover up with some sort of adhesive that deteriorated or otherwise gave way over the years.

I'm assuming the two screws on the Lum go through the backspacer and thread into the rear scale. Only way I could see that happening is if the threads on either the screws or the rear scale itself stripped. Question then becomes how/why could that happen to a knife in storage. Don't have a clue on that, but do recall seeing one other Lum with the same problem and IIRC, it too was blue.

Right from their warranty page....

http://www.spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/index.php?item=10

For the following repairs, please include $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling:

* Blade or Edge -- broken tip from prying or dropping, destroyed edge due to improper sharpening, loose blade from abuse, rust due to neglect or other blade issues. (Spyderco is unable to replace blades)
* Clips -- stripped screw holes, screws sheered off, broken or missing clip or other clip issues.
* Scale or Handle -- missing scale screws, knife action stiff, missing Kraton, or other handle issues.

Drop a $25 check or money order in a box with the knife and ship it off to Spyderco. Done deal. Easy.
