I know it's silly to get upset at things on Facebook, but I just stumbled across this group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=257762298829, titled 'only scum carry knives....THIS GROUP REMEMBERS ALL VICTIMS OF KNIFE CRIME'. It's the first part that torques me. People who prey on others are scum, and, yes, sometimes this involves knives, but it doesn't mean that everybody who carries a knife is out to stab or cut people, just like not everybody who carries a gun is looking to shoot somebody, and not everybody who drives is out to commit hit&runs on pedestrians.
Also annoying: I had to go into a courthouse today to fill out some papers, and had to leave my knives in my car. Even though I ended up setting off the metal detector and getting pulled aside for an inspection, I could have snuck a blade through... the guy with the detector wand just assumed that my boots were setting it off because of steel toes and didn't ask me to take them off to double-check.
Preaching to the choir: Useful tools, not weapons, people!

Just plain stupid, notice in the posted picture is a kitchen knife of sort, is that what his/her generalization of people have tucked in their pants? The majority of stabbing and knife crimes I see are kitchen type knives, or large cheap fixed blades, not folders, usually whatever is handiest.
So what will we cut our food and veggies with when all the knife nuts finally get knives banned?

Just as soon as they ban cars due to 'auto crime' (Hit and run, DUI, etc.) then I'll turn my semi-deaf ear towards 'knife crime'.

Amen, there is a **** of a lot more people that are killed by drunk drivers or hit and runs then by stabbings. I know tons of people that will go to the bar and get hammered then drive home, nobody seems to care about that.Percival wrote:Just as soon as they ban cars due to 'auto crime' (Hit and run, DUI, etc.) then I'll turn my semi-deaf ear towards 'knife crime'.

Harsh to call it stupid although poorly thought out and illogical would cover it.
I doubt that a close relative of someone that's been stabbed to death is seeing it with cold, logical detachment though. I'm sure that the US has "Mothers against guns" or similar, with a lot more than 120 members. The anti-knife groups are simply the UK equivalent. While hardcore criminals do have guns in the UK, we don't tend to have fairly average hoodlums carrying anything but knives.
Besides, if you were to rail against every "stupid" facebook group you encountered then you'd get little sleep and end up losing your voice.
:D
Be fair now, if viewed with cold, hard detachment, the Spyderco group, that I and many others here will be a member of, could be considered a little strange by the vast majority.
